The story centres on the critical events in the last year of the Trojan War, which lead to Achilleus' killing of Hektor and determine the fate of Troy. But Homer's theme is not simply war or heroism. Seven Greek cities claim the honour of being the birthplace of Homer (c. 8th-7th century BC), the poet to whom the composition of the Iliad and Odyssey are attributed. The Iliad is the oldest surviving work of Western literature, but the identity - or even the existence - of Homer himself is a complete mystery, with no reliable biographical information having survived. E. V. Rieu initiated Penguin Classics with Allen Lane and his famous translation of the Odyssey was the first book published in the series in 1947. The Iliad followed in 1950. (My parcel was delivered without any damage) About the Iliad- If you are buying a collectable of the Iliad I assume you have prior knowledge of the Iliad. It’s is truly E.V.RIEU translation, revised at that. It is in prose form as original Iliad by homer, not very difficult nether very easy to read. Reads fluently though. If you do not have any knowledge about what is the Iliad, the Iliad and the odyssey are two epics written by Homer around 7th century bc. The Iliad is the story of the Trojan war this book has many ancient heros like Achilles, Odysseus, Hector many more and how they fought in war, how the war lasted and many things to note. I am giving 5 stars for the product I got rather than the Iliad, because I can find it for free anywhere on the internet.

Amazing cover

A good classic looking bound.
Let’s talk about the book- The book is a pretty sturdy cloth bound, good quality pages, ribbon markers. The cloth and colour is same as shown in the picture. (My parcel was delivered without any damage) About the Iliad- If you are buying a collectable of the Iliad I assume you have prior knowledge of the Iliad. It’s is truly E.V.RIEU translation, revised at that. It is in prose form as original Iliad by homer, not very difficult nether very easy to read. Reads fluently though. Original, but cover art can smudge easily.
The packaging was great. Authentic book. But the cover art can fade and smudged easily. Not reader friendly, has glued binding and will not open flat. Cannot hold the book open with one hand.

Beautiful covers!
I picked up this Penguin Classics cloth bound version of the Iliad along with The Odyssey for two reasons; First, I was researching various translations and decided on Rieu's as the one I wanted to read. Secondly, the simple cover design really stood out to me. I decided to start with reading The Odyssey because that was the one I had more of an I treat in, despite this technically being first in a timeline sense so I can't comment on the quality of the translation in this book. But I feel if it's as well done as his translation of The Odyssey has been done, it's going to be just as enjoyable. I really love how the book looks and feels with these cloth bound covers. It also has a ribbon bookmark built in, which is very handy as well as just looking nice. I'll be putting some fraycheck on the end of it before I start reading though, as the bookmark ribbon on my copy of The Odyssey has started to fray at the end. I really love how these two books look together and will definitely be picking up more of these Penguin Classics books in the future. Their designs are fantastic.

Will suffice wish they had higher quality options available
Cloth feels alright, sturdy enough for my daily travel to and from work. The book name on binding dimension did wear off just from being held in my hands is really my only complaint, I would pay more for higher quality materials, like leather cover, and boom name on binding that doesn’t rub off from reading being held in hand.
