A Bit of a Disappointment
This book was highly recommended by instructors at a wildflower workshop I attended in Northern Minnesota. It's well-written and has many very lovely photos but it hasn't been as helpful as I'd hoped. It gives names of plants to use but generally they aren't cross-referenced so when I've looked for a particular plant, if I don't know it's genus, then I'm finding I have to go to other books and hope I find it in one of them. Also, gives a lot of suggestions for what might compliment a particular plant but doesn't provide a photo of either of them. I'm disappointed that it hasn't been as helpful as I'd thought it would be as I plan my wildflower garden.

Useful for midwest gardeners
I really like the plant info sheets at the back of the book. They consistitute about half of the content. The body of the text is a nice overview but not very specific. I appreciated it's focus on my local plant life but as a general educational book it's medium useful.

Useful, but not as comprehensive as I had hoped.
Useful, but I expected a bit more. The pictures are a bit dull and I hoped for more photos of individual plants to help with identification. There is a lot of writing in the book and I didn't want to read as much as I wanted to see photos.

Lovely Book
Bought this as gift for my husband. It's a really good book for anyone interested in gardening with the wonderful plants all around us.

Great resource for MN Native Plants
Great book, only thing that would have made it better would have been to include garden designs/layouts. It provided great descriptions of the plants/grasses/trees. Definitely would recommend this book. It's a great resource and tool.

Looking for native alternative plants
Lynn Steiner has done an excellent job escorting us through the selection of native plants. Photographs are visually helpful for I D and she gives insight what natives can be incorporated to one's garden, as well as have gardens that are exclusive. Excellent choice

great for picking out plants for planning/replacing nonnatives for a native garden
love the informative layout and photos. i think I just need a book that has "all plants found in minnesota, including non-natives and invasives" but this is a good start. Might just have to add the latter as separate books.

Northern Gardener's Resource
This book is an excellent resource for northern gardeners who want to use native plants in their landscaping. The author has done a remarkable job identifying native plants suitable for our region and different garden locations - sunny, dry, moist, and shady. The plants, shrubs, grasses, and trees listed are natives available for the average gardener to purchase.
