Excellent book. It does exactly what the title says - word by word analysis of the yoga sutras with word meaning, source root, and grammatical classification. There are 2 introductions, which are good read by themselves. Also, what pleases me a lot, is that the book stays withing yoga sutra for translation; it does not deviate wildly into fields of vedanta or modern society spiritual cliches. Answering to the other reviewer, who posted an a r r o g a n t comment "I have seen better commentaries". Strictly speaking, it is not a commentary, it is what it claims to be - grammatical analysis of the sutras. As it is impossible to translate yoga sutras without adding some commentaries (the interpretation itself is a commentary already!), once in a while they add a commentary after grammatical analysis. But, again, to reiterate, what is especially good about this book, is that they tend to stay within yoga/samkhya philosophical framework. A few not-so-good things in the book are related to the printing quality. It is terrible. You can see the characters on the other side of the page; there are numerous typos; sanskrit transliteration is in a terrible font; there are hanging lines over the pages; structuring of the grammatical analysis - like indents, boldness, etc. - could have been better. And, last but not least, it would benefit greatly from inclusion of yoga sutras in Devanagari script as well. However, the content of the book totally overweighs the poor printing. Five stars.

This isn't the best translation and commentary on Patanjali. I've read better. It isn't terrible and is worth reading if you can't find better ...
