No, It's a fixed plate, but can be cleaned with a damp cloth.

Has anyone tried potato waffles in this machine?

Yes, works well with mash, flour, eggs etc but mash needs to be drier than normal. Also waffles harder to remove as the consistency is looser than sweet waffles. Need at least 10 minutes to dry and cook
