Kids Bento-Style 5-Compartment Leak-Proof Lunch Box

If you're on the fence about which bento box to order for your child (BENTGO KIDS or YUMBOX), I will compare the two brands in this review. My family has used both kinds for about a month. **BENTGO KIDS** My 5 year-old kindergartner takes this box for his lunch, and it is truly the better choice for YOUNGER CHILDREN in my opinion. It has a more juvenile color scheme, five small food compartments, DURABLE RUBBER TRIM on the top and bottom, and overall exudes a higher quality product that will withstand more abuse than the Yumbox. The latches are more HEAVY-DUTY than the Yumbox, and although it can be a bit difficult for kids to close at first (it's a tight seal around the inner tray), my son got the hang of it after a couple tries. The Bentgo Kids trays come in three different colors and seem more durable than the Yumbox trays. The Bentgo Kids box doesn't hold a LOT of food, but it is plenty for my son, and I imagine it will provide ample food until he's in second or third grade (probably a good box for 3-8 year-olds?). The largest compartment will fit a half sandwich unless your bread is huge, but then you can just cut it in quarters. The Bentgo Kids shell is a bit larger than the Yumbox, so it's a tight squeeze into my son's soft-sided LL Bean box, but we manage to fit the Bentgo and a Lifefactory water bottle into the LL Bean box. *UPDATE* - We recently purchased an LL Bean Discovery lunch box, and this easily fits either the Bentgo or Yumbox as well as a water bottle and extras. The Bentgo also fits in a Lands' End ClassMate soft sided lunch box with a Goodbyn water bottle (see photo). Does the Bentgo Kids leak? Nope. The rubber gasket on the lid is impressive, and ranch dressing has stayed neatly in the center dip compartment. The gasket on the Yumbox doesn't seem to be as good, so this is another reason why I like the Bentgo Kids better for younger children. It's pretty much foolproof. To clean, simply remove the inner tray and put it in the dishwasher. I always hand wash the outer shell or at least give it a wipe-down each day. **YUMBOX PANINO** I purchased this Yumbox Panino for my 9 year-old third grader. I like the Yumbox Panino colors and design better for OLDER CHILDREN (maybe 7-12 year-olds?). It's less juvenile than the Bentgo Kids box, and the Panino version has room for a larger sandwich. Since its tray has thin dividers, it will HOLD A BIT MORE FOOD too. The Yumbox has a slightly SMALLER FOOTPRINT than the Bentgo Kids, and it fits snugly in my son's LL Bean lunch box, but his water bottle does make his lunch box lid bulge out - not a big deal. We have since upgraded to the LL Bean Discovery lunch box, which is much deeper and has plenty of room. If you only have room for a small, narrow water bottle, the Goodbyn bottle is a great option (found on Amazon). We have packed ranch dressing in the center, and as long as I press down tightly while latching the lid, it doesn't leak. The inner tray has printed text underneath (they are not removable stickers), but it does have a more grown-up look to it than the whimsical designs on other Yumbox trays. Yumbox sells plain trays on their website. The tray easily snaps out for washing in the dishwasher, but we always wash the outer shell by hand. FOUR compartments or SIX? Yes, Yumbox offers two different versions - same size, but the trays have either more or less compartments. I debated greatly over which to buy, but ultimately I decided that the Panino (4 compartment) style would grown with my son better than the 6-compartment Yumbox, and on days when he doesn't pack a large sandwich, I simply use silicone baking cups as dividers. SUMMARY: Both boxes have different features, so the box to choose really depends on your child's needs. The YUMBOX PANINO is my favorite for OLDER CHILREN or those who eat larger lunches because of the tray design and color combinations. The BENTGO KIDS is terrific for younger kids as it seems MORE DURABLE yet holds plenty of food for little ones. I do wish the Bentgo Kids box came in more colors, but perhaps this is in the works. For now, my son enjoys using his different-colored trays to switch things up a bit. The rubber trim began to peel off a bit on the outer container (though I always hand wash it), and Bentgo sent me a replacement! What a wonderful product and equally great customer service!

This Bentgo box is perfect for my sons lunch. I love that is compact, can fit multiple items, and doesnt leak. My only wish is that it had some kind of built in cooler pack, because it is so big and sturdy and thick, i worry dont use it when we are gone for long periods of time because i worry it will not be able to keep the temperature cool all day. We love the green color!

I bought this Bentgo lunch box for my son to take to school and it has been really convenient. I love having the separate compartments because I can pack fruit, snacks, and his main food without everything getting mixed together. It feels sturdy, closes securely, and is easy to clean. The portion sizes also work well for a young child. We’ve been very happy with it!

We had continual leaking problems with other brands. The boxes were technically working, but my very small 6 year old was unable to manage opening and closing and getting the seal right without help. When you buy something for a small child, you need it to work for a small child. To be honest, I have hand/wrist strength issues sometimes, and other brands were hard for even adult me to seal properly. Enter the Bentgo. I hesitated to try it given the price. But. It had a great warranty, and we really needed something that worked in the real world with a real kid. We tried the Bentgo and the leaking issues stopped.. 100% stopped. My small child was able to open and close on his own without help. This was great for his self-esteem as well. We use it five days a week as he doesn't like the school lunches. He eats a PB&J sandwich every day. I cut the crusts off and cut diagonally to fit in the largest compartment. I wish this compartment fit sandwiches a little better. If they had a "sandwich" model, that let you pack a sandwich and a few sides, I would likely buy it. But, anyways, close enough. I can put applesauce, yogurt, whatever I want without leaking. After a year of use, the clasps broke. I contacted customer service via email and sent them a picture of the break. Hannah from Customer Service called me back to better understand how we broke it. She was respectful of my time, first asking if I had time to discuss. I really appreciate this. I work full time, and I get really annoyed if its a bad time and someone tries to push a conversation on me... but, this wasn't like that at all. It really seemed like she was asking not to "judge" our break, but understand the break to provide feedback on the product so it could be improved. Overall, I was pretty impressed the company cared that much. A new lunchbox is being sent our way, should be here tomorrow per Hannah. I reach out to customer service mid last week regarding the break, so for them to move so quickly is really appreciated. I don't have to go buy a new container to hold me over waiting for the replacement on this one. This product is more expensive than others on the market, but from our experience, this does fall into the "you get what you pay for" category, and we continue to be very happy with the purchase. We even bought a second in a different color for our younger child.

I've been using this lunch box for over 2 years and it is the complete package- it's durable, leakproof, fun for kids, and has lots of spaces for variety. Kids are natural grazers and this lunch box encourages you to pack smaller amounts of several different things which works perfectly for how kids prefer to eat. I usually use the small center compartment for the kids' vitamins and that way I never forget to give them. The largest compartment is the perfect size for half a sandwich but you can definitely fit a whole one in if you cut it into 4 squares and put them in standing up (see photo). It is leakproof and even very liquidy items don't spill over into other compartments. For example, you can pack something like yogurt in one compartment and granola in another and not worry about the granola getting wet or soggy (see photo). You do have to hand wash the outside cover because the high temperature of the dishwasher will cause degradation of the seal and the box will start to leak. I made that mistake with my first Bentgo, being lazy and thinking that it really didn't matter and my box ended up leaking. The outside cover is super easy to wash though, it literally takes about 45 seconds. I saw one of the top reviews mentioned their outside cover getting moldy, that has never happened to me and, like I said, I've owned these boxes for over 2 years. I use them every single day. Even when my kids aren't in school (they are little so they don't go every day), I feed them their lunch in the Bentgo because they just love it and get so excited to open it up and see what Mommy packed them. You can't go wrong with these boxes! I highly recommend them. Bentgo customer service is also amazing! One of the hinges became loose on our very first box and then my daughter dropped it breaking it entirely. I sent them an email explaining what had happened and they wrote me back right away asking what color I wanted my replacement box to be and what address I wanted them to send it to. I was beyond impressed. Happy lunch packing!! :)

4 stars because these are tricky to open! My kids can hardly ever open them on their own. I do love the various sized compartments and it holds a lot of food! They’re super cute and fit in a lunchbox so nicely.

We have had the kids bentgo plastic lunch boxes for a long time now & we absolutely ADORE these lunch boxes!!! Seriously, I will never use another brand of lunch boxes again! Never. Ever. When first shopping for kids lunch boxes years ago, I was cheap and decided to go with the generic various cartoon character lunch boxes and used glad and various other Tupperware we had laying around the house to pack the lunch inside, along with plastic zip lock bags. I had such a hard time keeping track of the 3-4 different Tupperware plastic food containers and 3-4 lids per lunchbox, not to mention cleaning them all every single day!!!! Also, we were wasting so many plastic bags- which not only end up filling up landfills but also costs us money to replace constantly! After seeing a suggested ad for bentgo kids lunchboxes, we decided to upgrade and get the kids actual bentgo kids Lunch boxes to try out. We started by just buying one bentgo lunch box for each child to see if it was something that would work for our busy family. We are so glad we did!!! All we could think was, why in the world did we not do this before!?! It was totally worth the investment! The plastic bentgo lunch boxes were just the right size for our kids! The portion sections of the boxes were great and we love how the lunchbox comes in just two simple pieces! No more washing 3-4 containers and 3-4 lids from each lunch box every day per kid! We went from washing a total of more than 10+ containers and an additional 10+ lids a day (3 school kids) to only washing three!!! The best part is that they rinse off so easy! They are even dishwasher safe! They are so easy to wash that our kids wash their own lunch boxes and we check them. I’m all about products that make parent life easier/more effective and this lunch box does both of those things!!! We love them so much that we tell all our parent friends about bentgo because they make sending a healthy school lunch for your child actually easy! Plus- no leaks! BPA free Fast shipping Update: it’s April 2025 and these lunch boxes are still in good shape and they held up nicely. These lunch boxes have been thrown around by my kids and through the dish washer more times than I can count. Still holding up! Kids are older now and we upgraded them to the adult size Bentgo boxes. Now these lunch boxes are getting passed down to cousins. Now that’s quality!

Always a fantastic lunch container that lasts atleast 2 school years. Got 6 in total to keep the rotation and dishes down to a science. Highly highly highly recommend!

After nearly 3 years, the previous two i bought needed replacing. My children love their lunch boxes, as do I. Leak proof, keeps everything fresh, beautifully designed and long lasting! Excellent value for money.

La usiamo tutti i giorni ed e' comodissima, sicura, non perde liquidi e molto facile da pulire. La misura e' perfetta eccetto per i due compartimenti piu'piccoli dove alla fine non facile mettere qualcosa ne avrei preferito uno solo e piu grande.

Habe diese Brotdose für meine Tochte gekauft und bin sehr zu frieden. Grad für ein Kind, welches in die Krippe oder Kindergarten geht ist diese Perfekt. Die Kammern haben genau die richtige Größe für die kleine. Das Gute daran ist, dass diese Kammern alle von einander abisoliert sind. So kann ich ihr in die eine Kammer Joghurt füllen ohne dann Angst haben zu müssen, dass dieser sich mit dem Brot vermischt. Diese ist Absolut auslaufsicher. Das Abwaschen klappt auch Kinderleicht, der Einsatz mit den Kammern lässt sich herrausnehmen. Durch die leicht abgerundeten Kammern kommt man schnell mit einem Schwamm oder Lappen rein, wischt Drumherum und spült es einfach aus.

Just its very hard for my 3 year old to close it it hard for her to close she bring them open. Bit heavy too it makes her bag heavy. Other then that it is a good lunch box leak proof and never mix any compartment with other even she bring lunch open not tightly closed still nothing fall out
