What is a self retracting lifeline (SRL)?

A self-retracting lifeline (SRL) is a fall protection device that automatically extends and retracts, keeping tension on the lifeline. It locks instantly during a fall, reducing fall distance and impact. Ideal for construction and elevated work.

What are SRLs used for?

SRLs are used for fall protection in elevated work areas. They provide mobility while keeping the lifeline taut and lock instantly in a fall, minimizing impact. Commonly used in construction, roofing, and tower climbing.

What is the difference between SRL and SRL Le?

SRLs are standard self-retracting lifelines for overhead anchors. SRL-LE (Leading Edge) models are reinforced for use near sharp edges and foot-level tie-offs, offering added durability and energy absorption per ANSI Z359.14 LE standards.

Do self retracting lifelines expire?

SRLs don’t have a set OSHA expiration date, but they must pass regular inspections and be removed from service if damaged or fail inspection. Follow ANSI Z359.14 and manufacturer guidelines for lifespan and maintenance.

What are the OSHA requirements for self-retracting lifelines?

OSHA requires SRLs to limit arresting force to 1,800 lbs and deceleration distance to 3.5 ft. They must meet OSHA 1910 & 1926 standards and comply with ANSI Z359.14. Regular inspections are mandatory before each use.
