At the Foot of the Snows: A journey of faith and words among the Kham-speaking people of Nepal

A Journey of a Lifetime
This story, recommended to me by a man in a Nepali equivalent to a Tennessee meat & three, is one of pure inspiration, suffering, joy, and hardship. Who knew how much the lives of one small American family in the late 60's through the early 90's could change a part of the world in such a drastic way for the Kingdom? This story had me on the edge of my seat, fighting back tears one moment, and calling out to my wife the next in disbelief at what I was reading. This family, through the Holy Spirit, brought light to the people of the Himalayas. By the end, I felt like I had walked much of this path with the Watters. If you have any desire to travel into places unfamiliar for the purpose of Jesus, then I highly recommend this book. It is a raw depiction of what can and does happen, and though scary and almost overwhelming at times, you will walk away with a heart full of joy and readiness. "If they could do what they did in this book, then surely, I can do something, too." God is good. God is still active in the world.

At the Foot of the Snows
This is a terrific story! If you don't enjoy this book you need to check and see if your soul is still working. Some of the thrilling stories in this book of God's grace to the Watters family have leaked out in the past and some must remain untold for security reasons, but what is told here is enough to bring tears to the eyes and inspiration to the heart. Adventure, intrigue, perseverance, torture, murder, tragedy and triumph, it's all here in one of the most remote places on earth. The writing is excellent with a touch of wry humor and the natural storyteller's knack for keeping one engaged. A large number of pictures are sprinkled throughout which add greatly to one's enjoyment and understanding of the text. My only disappointment is that there wasn't more. Do whatever you must do to obtain a copy of this book and see if you don't want to share it with others. I certainly have.

Fascinating read
The author demonstrates his great love for the people he lived with, the translation work he engaged in and the God he served. At the same time the book is honest account of a very real man's struggle in times of doubt and discouragement. Filled with fascinating cultural observations and just some downright page turner stories, this was an inspiring story of a life fully lived.

Outstanding
This is an excellent book to read. Hard to put down. The family in this book had some great adventures. What a way to grow up and to teach the the word of God in another language.Great job David Watters, may you RIP in gods kingdom. And to the two sons that grew up in a god loving home. A home wherever their god lead them. :-)

Transparent. Honest. Insightful. Analytic. Stories are spell-binding.
This is a detailed look at life in Nepal, among the Kham. An excellent account, indeed. It is transparently written, unafraid, and honestly talks about both the author's weaknesses as well as those seen in the group in which he is working. I appreciated the anthropological, analytic, and scholarly way the authors covered spiritual, linguistic, societal, and personal issues. This is not just a rare and well written look at a missionary's experience in an effort to help the Kham people, but a personal account of how the author grew in his relationship to these wise people and in his relationship to God.

In depth mission book
This is a very detailed and fascinating book of missionary work abroad. An excellent read. Some of the words are difficult to pronounce, and the details can at times seem overwhelming as can any foreign mission experience.

A translator's experience in a remote section of the Himalayas.
This is a fascinating story of the courage and tenacity of a young linguist who takes his family with him to a remote Himalayan tribal village. His challenge was to reduce the tribal language to a written alphabet, create a dictionary, translate the Bible, all the while befriending the quirky and hostile people. While hiking all around this lofty, dangerous terrain, he has numerous adventures and harrowing, exhausting treks. He records a detailed description of the living conditions, culture and rugged lifestyle of these people and how hard it was to live among them. It also records the heartwarming report of how dramatically lives were changed by the power of the gospel he was translating. Some of those courageous ones whose lives were changed later were faced with a backlash of heartless violence.

A gripping true story with purpose
The story is true, but it’s not simply a dry recollection of facts. As I read it, I was there, able to see the sights, hear the sounds and even taste the flavours. The storyline kept me turning the pages. It also challenges people working cross-culturally today to be humble, respectful, recognise that we don’t always have the answers, yet also know when and how to push boundaries and refuse to take ‘no’ for an answer.

Exceptional. Fascinating. Motivating. Instructive. I picked it up for vacation and figured it would be a good read on the way. I could not put it down. Very thankful for the quality of the writing, the description of life, and the sincerity of the author in their struggles.

Amazing story, beautifully told
Dave Watters, was a friend. His two sons, Steve and Daniel, are both known to me. Between them (Dave's materials and the boys editing and polishing) they have produced an extraordinary book which modestly tells an amazing story. This volume is informative about a culture and about the way Bible translation works. It's also a thrilling story of the way God uses unknown people to accomplish great things as they trust Him. If you're interested in Christianity and in the mission of the Gospel to reach every people group on earth, this is a must read.
