I will be painting a bbq smoker. how would you recommend to prep the surface before applying the paint?

I would at least knock off the rust then wipe it down with thinner, mineral spirits or other solvent. The cleaner you get the metal, the better the paint will bond. I put it on my BBQ grill, I didn't put a lot of effort into prep and cleaning, just knocked off the loose rust and paint, it still looks pretty good.

can this be used on a stove hood?

Yes. It is a good choice for stove hoods. It has a temp range up to 1200 degrees. If you get our stove hood that hot, you deserve to burn your house down and write a book how you did it.

Hey Mark, I painted my scooter muffler yesterday and same thing, it looks brown. I was wondering if yours ended up drying black ? It's been 24 hours, I haven't heated it yet, maybe that helps?

Yes, you can. I used seven parts of paint to one part mineral spirits. 30 psi at the spray gun. Wonderful results and much less expensive than spray cans.
