Is the glass substantial or thin (especially at the lip) and so easy to chip or break?

No. The glass is fairly thick and heavy, even at the lip. I've been very happy with these.

Can i put hot water in this?

No. I don't know why you'd put hot water in anything glass. Glass is a high heat conductor and will burn you if you touch it. Plus it's thin glass and may shatter from the heat shock. If you must, be sure to acclimate it to the heat and wear gloves.

Is this product hot liquid tolerant?

Definitely. My daughter uses them for carafes for social gatherings.
