Provided some peace of mind
This is a nifty little product. I'd been having some unusual allergy symptoms since I moved my office into one of the rooms in my house (coughing, sore throat, post nasal drip). Never having been an allergy sufferer before I started to wonder if there may be a mold issue in the room. Since there were a number of other changes at the time I moved into this room (moved furniture around, put in a used air conditioner, etc.) I was having trouble pinpointing what was the issue, and I was also not sure if maybe I had just developed a grass pollen allergy as I normally don't spend my summers working from home (pandemic). I ordered this test, it was very easy to use, it was actually kind of fun like a science experiment. You take an outdoor sample as a baseline, then the machine sucks in the air for 5 minutes in the center of the room you want to test. The kit also comes with one surface tape if you want to test a surface sample. I sent everything in, got results very fast (they give you a shipping bag and label, and it's 2 day mail). Results sent to my email in a comprehensive report. Total turnaround time was only 1 week. The report explains different types of mold and common sources. We discovered elevated mold levels in one of the rooms we tested, not the room I had been working in though. So I'm going to chalk my symptoms up to seasonal allergies and hope they go away with the cold weather. The room with the elevated mold was scheduled to be fully renovated anyway. Some other reviewers complained about the price of this test, it cost me about $200 I think all in but I did all of the samples and you can choose how many you want to test. But other than hiring an air quality expert to come into your house (good luck finding one when you live in the middle of nowhere like me), this is your next best option.

Not the least expensive, but I believe it to be the best home mold test kit....
Maybe not the least expensive, but an excellent way to test your home. Though no mold was visible, we suspected a problem (one family member was ill) and I researched numerous approaches to testing. This option (My Mold Detective) seemed like a good compromise between the extremely expensive professionals and the cheaper do-it-yourself test kits on the market. Very easy to use. Just read the rather simple instructions. And "YES" you do have to pay for the lab tests for each sample/test. The sampling collection required about 7 minutes per sample. They supply a prepaid FedEx shipping envelope and label. The test results turnaround was fast, via email, about 5 days from drop off at the FedEX site). The report was thorough and detailed, yet very easy to understand. It detailed about a dozen specific types of molds, etc. for which they tested. They even have an 800 number if you want to discuss the results. I have very high confidence in the results. You get 4 air "collectors", and one surface "collector". They mandate that you use one of the air collectors for an outside test to establish a baseline with which you can compare the indoor results. BTW, despite no visible mold or even dampness, we do have a significant problem which seems to be caused by one of our HVAC systems. Testing multiple rooms, across the two HVAC system zones in our house, made the culprit rather obvious. HVAC guys are coming this week, but to me it appears as though one of our HVAC air handlers was not draining completely during the AC season which allowed mold to grow in the unit.

Works for a quick check
A starting place if you suspect mold. You need to do both air and direct samples to get a true reading of each room. I still recommend the IICRC protocol by professionals if mold is discovered. I am not sure how these little machines compare to an official air sampling machine that is more powerful and timely. The discs are really small compared to the sample that a professional company takes. I did get a read however. The lab report gave a thorough breakdown of both the direct and air samples. This kit is a great quick check. Please call professionals if mold is present.

I feel Scammed!!
I tested my whole house and labeled each test according to the room it came from.I paid $240 to get the tests analyzed at the lab. Both of the wet areas in the house (kitchen and Bathroom) came back positive for mold. ???I had no sign of any wet/damaged area in the kitchen or bathroom However I did have visible mold and water damage in the basement that was tested and came back negative!! My wife was very concerned and wanted to get the professionals out to start tearing down walls, remodeling bathroom and kitchen or what ever it would take. Knowing what I know working in the HVAC industry, I retested the kitchen and bathroom and labeled them (upper room and Lower Room). Can anyone guess what the results are?? Yes they came back NEGATIVE!!!!! It cost me over $450.00 to test everything and tons of stress for my wife!We thought we might have to tear apart the bathroom to find mold somewhere in a wall behind the shower or kitchen cabinets.Don’t waste your money or time with this product call the professionals if you have any questions about mold being present in your home.

Broken
Unit is easy enough to use but after collecting two samples it would no longer turn on or function. After several days of back and forth with the company they shipped a new one and collected the broken one. The “new” one was clearly refurbished. It was obvious the packaging had all been opened before. A foot from the bottom of the unit fell off when removing from the box, then a chunk of glue that was clearly used to repair the lid area. It still functions and samples were collected but it’s definitely frustrating to pay so much money for a broken unit and then have it replaced with a used and not well repaired one.Testing is expensive, so fingers crossed that it’s accurate. I now have very little faith in this company.
