Q: How wide is the space between slats? We have an escape artist

The space between slats is 2 inches making it virtually impossible for even Copperfield to escape. Bear in mind, if you are planning to use the little kitty door, a space of 30" or less makes the door inoperable. Also, there is no door for you to escape! The color is off white. I bought two and am very happy with them.

Q: Do you have to screw into your walls to secure the gate?

No it has rubber bumpers on the sides. The 'screw' is built into the central bar of the gate. As you lift a pin, a screwing mechanism on the gate itself allows you to customize the pressur to hold it firmly into the door frame without any need to damage the door frame.

Q: Can the door be closed so a dog cannot go through? I want the gate to keep my puupy in the kitchen so I can see her.

Yes, the little cat door is on hinges and has a locking latch when you want it closed. This is a really nice gate. I think you'd be impressed with its quality.
