Jonathan Green Black Beauty Dense Shade Grass Seed - 25 lb

I bought this for our heavily shaded side yard. The seed took some time to sprout - had to water daily - but the blades were dark green and lovely. I will get more next year and get like, 5 bags instead of the 1 I got this year.

This grass came up even though we have had very little rain. Works great

I bought this shady variety, grass seed for a problem area. I spread some topsoil down first over the hard, clay Pennsylvania soil and planted this. The package said germination in 14 to 21 days which I was disappointed with however with diligent watering it actually germinate it in less than seven days. It’s looking pretty good right now.

**my photos reflect 1 and then 2 week progress of grass growth** Man, this stuff is quite spendy! I was a little hesitant about spending $12 on a single one pound bag of grass seed. However, so far I have been thoroughly impressed. This stuff says dense shade and it means dense shade! I put these seed in a small corner of my yard, an area that receives no direct sunlight all day, except for a small portion of the area. Within two weeks I had quite a bit of grass popping up. What impressed me the most about it is the fact that in the area in which I planted it, part of it receives sun and part of it doesn't. Usually the part that receives sun would have more grass growing taller than the area that receives no sun. However, the grass grew completely even across both the sun an no sun areas. The grass is coming in pretty nicely too, not too thin. I will definitely be re seeding but for now I am very happy with the amount of grass coming up. I live in the pacific northwest by the way. Also, the way we planted it was by tilling the soil, spreading the seeds along with a small amount of fertilizer, and then covering the seeds with a light layer of potting soil. I would highly recommend this method, as these seeds really seem to appreciate having a layer of soil over them to grow up into. One note the seems obvious but may not be to some: do not walk on this while it's seeding and sprouting at all. There are small areas in my patch that I had no choice but to walk on at some points and in those spots the grass is really struggling. TLDR; This stuff grows very well in full shade if you plant it correctly and water it often.

Subpar for the price. It can up good in some spots but not most of the area. All that work prepping for crap seed. I will not buy again. Pic is only 1 area out it all turned out like that

MAGICAL! About 1.5 yrs ago, we had our backyard professionally graded and sod installed. Despite babying it after install, it died in 5 months. The installer said it had to be the dense shade because the sod was high quality and rated for our territory. He felt bad and recommended the Black Beaury. I didn’t have high hopes. If Sid wouldn’t work back there, what would? In less than ten days, our raw soil has green grass shoots. It’s a dense shade miracle. This seed has some fairy dust in it, for sure. I’ll update this post in spring with an update on how well it returns after winter season shift and dormancy. Until then, I’m pleasantly surprised! Prep Notes: I aerated with manual tool, lightly raked bare soil, laid seed with spreader, used small amount of hay to cover seed from birds, then over seeded a week later. I only watered each zone for 5 minutes at a time in the AM for first 10 days. I don’t let the seed get soaked. Then, I moved the sprinkler to next zone. Pretty easy stuff! I would wager to say that maybe 25% of the seed sprouted! It wasn’t cheap and my conditions were ideal for a good harvest…but it certainly wasn’t!

Best grass seeds will suited for shaded areas. It grew pretty well in my small lawn with no direct sunlight available. Highly recommended

this grass seed was for areas of my lawn which on both sides have trees which are dark areas. i have just looked at the growth today and there is hardly any grass there. all in all this was purchased to give growth in my dark areas and it did not do that. it was quite expensive as well .

shadey side of house with trees covering would not grow grass until this stuff! great product, came up quickly and has grown nicely!

Very fast germination & coverage however does not survive the UAE summer 😑
