Oxford Word Skills: Intermediate: Student's Pack (Book and CD-ROM)

Item in excellent condition, adequately packaged. I've found this a very good resource for teaching vocabulary. It's a self-study book, but came in useful for a change of pace in one-to-one lessons.

The best book for vocabulary

Great book

Vocabulary experts Ruth Gairns and Stuart Redman ("A Way with Words" & "Working with Words") continue their long collaboration with this innovative first entry into a 3-level self-study vocabulary series. Perhaps inspired by their recent work on the "Natural English" course they differentiate this latest series from the pack by giving it a functional framework which allows the words to be contextualised in full sentences in reasonably authentic encounters. This middle entry aimed at CEF B1-2 contains such bizarrely entitled units as "I can talk about weddings and funerals" and "I can describe the universe" and while the sentence level structure continues to impress the subject matter makes it less valuable than its predecessor as a supplement to traditional coursebooks, nonetheless I keep a copy around for some off the wall extra lessons and time fillers as well as the occasional set self-study homework. The book also comes with a CD-ROM containing some point a click nonsense which still isn't really up to much and the exquisite cover and check card which I've yet to see anyone make any use of whatsoever. The series, which covers 2,000 words over 80 units at each of the 3 levels, was quite rightly highly commended at the English-Speaking Union's Duke of Edinburgh English Language Book Award in 2009 as "an invaluable resource for teachers and a goldmine for learners" and if the number of times I have gone to my locker to find them missing are anything to go by then I am not the only one to thoroughly agree with this assessment. I can continue recommend this book except at funerals.

Es un libro con una gran variedad de vocabulario, con tests al final de cada capítulo para comprobar lo que has aprendido. Vienen las soluciones al final del libro. Tiene muchas ilustraciones lo que hace más ameno su aprendizaje.

Wonderfully prepared and scientifically compiled. Contents are very useful and helpful. CD-ROMs really help grasp complex concepts easily. Highly recommended for advanced English learners.

Pensavo che i libri della Cambridge fossero i migliori fino a quando non vengo a conoscenza di questo testo, comprato per caso dopo aver preso il testo ''Idioms and phrasal verbs'' dello stesso autore. Mentre qust'ultimo è forse il miglior testo che tratta il tema degli ''idioms'' e dei ''phrasal verbs'' attualmente in circolazione, l'''Oxford Word skills'' è un testo ideato per l'arricchimento del proprio vocabolario. Consiste in diverse unità ognuna delle quali tratta un argomento specifico attraverso l'uso di pagine ricchissime di disegni e di colori che aiutano il lettore ad assimilare moltissimi vocaboli presenti. Personalmente ho trovato più semplice ed intuitivo questo libro rispetto all'omonimo della Cambridge (di livello Intermediate-Upper Intermediate).. Insomma, questo libro è stato una vera rivelazione. Lo ricomprerei ad occhi chiusi 1000 volte. Peccato solo non aver conosciuto prima della sua esistenza.Altamente consigliato per uno studente autodidatta ovviamente, così come per uno studente seguito da un professore in classe che altrettanto ne trarrebbe beneficio .

Le système est vraiment bien conçu entre le livre et le cd-rom. On lit la théorie (le vocabulaire expliqué en anglais, pas de grammaire) et on fait des exercices de vocabulaire sur l'ordinateur. Les phrases sont lues par l'ordinateur, ce qui permet une bonne prononciation. Il y aussi des tâches d'écriture (de mots). Les exercices sont extrêmement bien faits, puisque par exemple : on a appris l'adjectif (accurate) mais le sens de la phrase nécessite que l'on utilise l'adverbe (accurately), qui est noté dans la définition d'accurate. Parfois on doit adapter la conjugaison. Ce n'est pas du bête par coeur, le lecteur devient acteur de son apprentissage. Cela m'a fait penser à la méthode Assimil. Les leçons sont regroupées par thème. Il y a des exercices de révisions après 5 Units. Les réponses sont données à la fin du fascicule. Je le recommande vivement à des personnes ayant déjà un niveau A2-B1, car tout le livre est en anglais, même les consignes des exercices.
