著者はYou TubeのTEDにも登場している魅力的な女性である。TEDを視聴して、どんな小説を書いてあるのか興味を持ち、Amazonで一番評価が高いと思った本書を手に取った。 主人公のEllaは米国の40歳の米国人女性で、夫と3人の子供に囲まれ、裕福で不自由のない生活をしている。そんな彼女が、ある1冊の書籍の書評を引き受けるところから物語は始まる。 その書籍の舞台はモンゴル帝国の襲来に悩まされる13世紀の中東で、有名な詩人のRumiと、Rumiの人生を根本から変える流浪の宗教者のShams of Tabrizの出会いと別れが描かれている。 そして物語は、Ellaの現在の実生活と、13世紀の書籍の内容が、同時並行で進行し、EllaとRumiの人生観や生活が、根本的に変わっていく様子が描かれる。 作品のテーマはLoveであり、一歩引いて冷静にみると、現在の生活に愛がないことに気づいた中年女性の物語という、割とありふれた話のようにも思えるが、実際に読みだすと物語の意外な展開や、魅力的な登場人物ーにぐいぐい引き込まれ、最後まで一気に読んでしまう不思議な小説である。 英語は、イスラム教の特殊な用語を除けば平易で、非常に読みやすいと感じた。

Hermoso. Una narrativa sencilla, digerible, que si forzarlo toca temas trascendentes para la vida. Mis expectativas eran altas y las ha superado.

Ella a forty year old homemaker, unhappily married finds herself in a midlife crisis. She decides to take up a job as a literary reader, her first manuscript is called 'Sweet Blasphemy'. It is a story about Rumi (the mysterious sufi poet). Ms. Shafaq delivers a mesmerising tale with powerful dual narrative. I found myself immersed and couldn't stop myself from underlning multiple passages that resonated deeply with me. The second narration is set in 1200 and reveals the story of Rumi and Shams of Tabriz. Profound, transformative friendship that delivers thought provoking perception on faith, life and human relationships. The forty rules of love interspersed throughout the novel talks about universal understanding of love that inspires deep reflection. This is a kind of story that touches one deep inside and that stays with you long after you finish it. For all those who love a life changing spiritual journey, wrapped in a captivating tale, then you got to grab a copy of this gem!
