Women Don't Owe You Pretty

In all honesty, I bought this book on a whim. I knew nothing of Florence Given and as a 27 year old, I wondered how a 21 year old "Instagrammer" could relate to me. Let me tell you, this book will make you laugh, cry, get angry and smile at the same time. And for me, it also served as a massive slap in the face to some of the toxic habits I'd allowed myself to get into. Florence will serve as the best friend you damn well needed in your life. I found myself reading this book within 5 hours and being unable to put it down. And to be honest, I'll probably read it multiple times. Do I recommend this book? ABSOLUTELY. I'd highly recommend this book to ALL women, no matter who you are. What I loved especially is that this book also caters to the LGBT+ community, especially those who identify as trans or non-binary - I'd happily give this book to my friend who is a trans woman. Please don't hesitate to buy this book. I promise you will love it. And if you don't, pass it on to someone else who would benefit from it.

Read the reviews and bought both books 'What a time to be alone' and 'women don't owe you pretty'. Love the appearance and effort gone into the presentation of this book and the artwork. I preferred this book as it delved deeper into the topics and explained more. Gave examples to help the reader understand. Easy to read and understand for beginners, flows well. Both books have their own unique style, of course they seem similar because they both discuss similar topics and there's not much else they can say differently apart from including their own personal experiences (which they have both done). It's a shame a book on feminism has caused two young women to fight one another as they're both sending the same message in their unique styles, and feminism has been around a long time way before these ladies wrote these books. They both have their own modern approach to feminism. My takeaway is that I think 'what a time to be alone' mostly highlights the experience from a young black woman, and 'women don't owe you pretty' highlights the experience from a young bisexual white woman.

I loved this book! Got sucked into buying it via Instagram and I do not regret it. This introduces you to feminism at a base level and builds up, covering the male gaze, privilege, and most importantly a lot of self help to make you ‘the love of your own life’. Everyone I know who has read this book takes something different from it as it calls for a lot of self reflection. This has really helped me, forcing me to look at people in my life (who I knew were toxic anyway, just needed this to kick me up the ass) and past experiences differently. Since buying this I’ve started actively making changes in my life and I feel better already. For anyone dealing with breakups, daily misogynists, bad friends or just wants to love themselves a bit more (which we should), this book is a MUST HAVE! Lent out to my friends straight away!

this book is great. its good for women who are looking for empowerment, its great in terms of the artwork and the design of the book - probably the nicest book I've ever owned in my life - its great for young girls, for beginner feminists, for men who want to broaden their knowledge of female mistreatment in the first world. there are definitely more enlightening feminist literatures out there and Florence doesn't say anything that hasn't already been said, but she still manages to make you think, to help empower and enlighten you in terms of yourself and your own body/mind/soul. its a good book for provoking thought about yourself and your own internal patriarchy, as well as thought about the society we live in. I would recommend for anyone, but I wish I'd had this book as a 14/15 year old, it would have saved me a lot of healing now I'm older

WOW! This book is something I wish I could give to my younger self and I can’t wait to give to my girls in the future. Literally tore through it within the space of a day, can’t wait to go and read it again next week. Firstly, the design and illustrations and gorgeous! Florence has such a unique and interesting eye with some lovely original pieces. The chapters are great, the book flows well and you will end up highlighting or bookmarking basically every page! This is perfect for any woman in your life. It taught me so much about self-confidence, living authentically, identifying your privilege and really doing the inner work on yourself. Florence has also credited other authors too which I think is really important - she acknowledges how she has benefitted off white privilege as well. Overall, this book will challenge and make you uncomfortable and let you be the BEST version of yourself you can be. Thank you, thank you thank you Florence!!

This book is amazing. I read it a few years ago now and its still stuck with me. I had a silly mindset over disliking some other girls and this book rewired my brain to stop that. I also gifted this to a colleague who was getting messed around by a player and I don’t know if it was the book but they broke up lol thank goodness

First of all this book is gorgeous to look at with lovely illustrations not gonna lie it looks fab on my bookshelf! The content of the book was not as great for me. I enjoyed the read but to be honest there was nothing new in there for me. I’m not a feminist scholar but have read a few books on the subject and follow a lot of Instagram accounts and most of the content of the book is stuff that I’ve heard before. That doesn’t make it any less true, however, and I think this would be a great gift for teenage girls who might just be starting to notice issues such as objectification, double standards, pressure for the perfect body etc. etc. (Or perhaps haven’t noticed it but this book can open their eyes and give them the words to recognise it). The book is good as it covers a wide range of issues so it’s a great introduction to feminism and also has general confidence tips and mentions white/cis/ability prívelege although not in much detail. One last comment, and perhaps this is a sign of me getting old but I found the writing style a bit irritating as it was littered with Americanisms such as getting “a raise” and I know the author is English so it seemed a little bit forced.

Like many of her followers, I relate to Florence and some of her experiences so I really enjoyed her book. Her artwork is so original and beautiful, the book really is a masterpiece! Florence is aware that she isn't reinventing the wheel with her words, she is simply sharing her experiences and referencing feminist ideas from other women. As someone who is not well read on these ideas, Florence was able to widen my perspective on things and has really helped me. I am only 23 but I would have loved to have this book when I was a teenager and I hope she is able to reach this younger audience as I imagine it would help them a lot too. I will definitely be revisiting this book and I recommend you give it a go too.

Eye opening, brilliant, honest. Florence Given will say it like it is. Everything you thought you knew about yourself and the way you’ve built your self confidence, you might need a step back and go through it again. Everything you did not want to deal with, she will take it out of you and make you face it. I suggest this book to every woman who needs to lift a huge middle finger to the world and might need a friend by her side while she does it. Facing your own flaws, talking about sexuality, setting boundaries, Florence is that friend through this journey. A thank you is not enough
