SB2C Helldiver in Detail & Scale (D&S, Vol. 52) Paperback – November 20, 1997

Great format to provide a breif history and features of this aircraft. My father was ARM2c serving in a squadron when this aircraft was in service with the U S Navy. It was soon to be replaced by AD-1 Skyraiders.

Excellent series. Always learn more when I read these. Outstanding photos.

Beyond reproach.

The Curtiss SB2C Helldiver saw its share of grief and controversy, some of its crews re-naming it the "Son of a Bitch, 2nd Class." Bert Kinzey takes an up-close-and-personal look at that troubled warbird in this 'Detail & Scale' volume from 1997.Kinzey's reputation for unbiased, authoritative writing is on display in SB2C HELLDIVER. He examines the aircraft's tortured development and initial deployment, revealing that the C-W engineers were at fault for the aircraft's shortcomings and not, as is sometimes reported, unrealistic USN requirements. Each model is examined in turn with factual precision and scads of photographs, many of which were discovered by D&S during pre-production on the book. The eight pages of color photographs include vintage shots and snaps of the sole surviving example.There are a number of other, more recent Helldiver books out there such as Peter Smith's Crowood volume but Kinzey's book is a solid entry in the Helldiver field. Recommended.
