This is a fun and unique craft that’s simple enough for a child to do alone. My 3 year old colored pictures I drew and my 8 year old enjoyed making his own creations. The paint is moist enough to cause the sponge to rise some on its own, and the water brush doesn’t exactly pinpoint where the moisture is added either, so ‘choosing’ which parts of your drawing are elevated or not isn’t as simple as it seems. My kids don’t mind, though. There are 10 discs to paint before the kit runs out and the markers are acrylic.

No directions and they don’t work.

This is one of those craft kits that sounds really fun in theory but didn’t quite live up to what we hoped for in practice. We were really excited to try the “puff-up” sponge idea — the idea is that you can decorate the flat compressed sponge with the included markers and then add a little water to puff up just the areas you want. Unfortunately, no matter how carefully we tried, we couldn’t get the puffing effect to stay in one spot. We tested adding just a single drop, tried a tiny brush of water, and tried different amounts, but once the sponge starts absorbing water, it spreads and the whole thing eventually expands. So instead of getting a fun raised design, the entire sponge just puffs up into its normal shape — which is still kind of fun but definitely not the cool partial 3D effect shown in the photos. A couple other things to note: The acrylic markers are great! They don’t bleed when you color, even when you add water, and they’ll be handy for other projects too — rock painting, posters, etc. So that’s a definite plus. Good value: You get quite a bit in the kit — sponges, markers, a tiny easel, water pens, and little chains to turn them into keychains. Downside: The sponges don’t come with holes for the keychains, so you’ll need a hole punch or scissors to make one yourself. Keep in mind: If these get wet later (like on a backpack or keychain), the whole sponge will puff up again, so they’re not very practical as actual keychains if they’ll get exposed to water. Overall, this is a cute busy craft for a rainy afternoon and kids will probably still have fun watching the sponges expand — but don’t expect precise designs or the “controlled 3D art” that the product pictures show.
