Really does well in shade!
**my photos reflect 1 and then 2 week progress of grass growth** Man, this stuff is quite spendy! I was a little hesitant about spending $12 on a single one pound bag of grass seed. However, so far I have been thoroughly impressed. This stuff says dense shade and it means dense shade! I put these seed in a small corner of my yard, an area that receives no direct sunlight all day, except for a small portion of the area. Within two weeks I had quite a bit of grass popping up. What impressed me the most about it is the fact that in the area in which I planted it, part of it receives sun and part of it doesn't. Usually the part that receives sun would have more grass growing taller than the area that receives no sun. However, the grass grew completely even across both the sun an no sun areas. The grass is coming in pretty nicely too, not too thin. I will definitely be re seeding but for now I am very happy with the amount of grass coming up. I live in the pacific northwest by the way. Also, the way we planted it was by tilling the soil, spreading the seeds along with a small amount of fertilizer, and then covering the seeds with a light layer of potting soil. I would highly recommend this method, as these seeds really seem to appreciate having a layer of soil over them to grow up into. One note the seems obvious but may not be to some: do not walk on this while it's seeding and sprouting at all. There are small areas in my patch that I had no choice but to walk on at some points and in those spots the grass is really struggling. TLDR; This stuff grows very well in full shade if you plant it correctly and water it often.

Bluegrass
Takes awhile to germinate but does grow and looks great in heavily shaded areas.

good product
I did blend this product with another brand, so I can't say - with certainty - that these seeds germinated. But the lawn under a huge shade tree came up nicely - so I'll have to say, overall, it was a success. The seed did take almost 2 weeks to start to germinate -- I thought it should have came up quicker considering the ideal weather conditions and that I sowed the seeds before the shade tree leafed out to give them optimum sun - along with watering daily. They came up quite thin and sparse at first -- I'd say it took a good month before it could be safely mowed without damaging the baby shoots. Even now (early summer) I'd have to say the lawn did not come up as thick as I had hoped for -- but I'm ok with the result, considering I could never get a blade of grass to grow in the bare spots for almost 10 years. So this year I turned over the soil with a tiller early in the year, added peat moss and other nutrients and started from scratch with a new lawn -- definitely the best lawn I've had in 10 years.

Grass seedlings for shaded minimal sun
Works. Planted underneath dense foliage south NJ. Took approximately 14-21 days for noticeable growth.

Germinates fast, but I doubt it is a good shade mix
The bag I bought has the following seeds: 20% Montana Tall Fescue 20% Taos Tall Fescue 20% Frontier Perennial Rye grass 15% Hood Chewings Fescue 15% Eugene Creeping Red Fescue 10% DeepBlue Kentucky Bluegrass This is way too much Tall Fescue for my taste. I mixed these seeds with another bag of a blended pure Fine Fescue. I only bought 1 pound of this mix. As such I will not be able to tell if this particular seed will do well. I can say it germinates fast, but considering the blend, I find it extremely expensive for about 5 oz of Fine Fescue seed. Of course these percentages are by weight, not seeds, but even so it is recommend that you use 100% Fine Fescue (or Rough Bluegrass) for deep shade, and 4 pounds of that per 1000 sq feet. 4 oz is not really going to cut it, then add for some strange reason they included Bluegrass, which has a worst shade tolerance than Tall Fescue. All in all, I gave it three stars, as I will not be able to tell if it it is working, like my previous tall fescue, it should look great until summer rolls around again, and the shade kills it, and it has great reviews. But saying that I recommend you get another brand that actually contains more fine fescue (deep shade) seed

Real Grass Seed, Not Filler
This is excellent grass seed. In the past, whenever I bought a $30โ40 bag, it seemed like only a small portion was actual seed and the rest was fillerโfertilizer, weed control, or other additives. This product is 100% grass seed, which made it feel like a much better value and exactly what I was looking for. As the photos show, the hardest part was the prep work. I weeded the entire backyard and turned over the soil by hand, which took about 12 hours. But that effort paid off. Three weeks later, Iโve got solid coverage. After seeding, I bought a sprinkler and watered for about 20 minutes each morning and evening. The results so far have been excellent. I probably overseeded a littleโI used the 15,000 sq. ft. bag on an 800 sq. ft. areaโbut it definitely contributed to the results.

Jonathon Green Black Beauty Dense Shade Grass Seed is as good as advertised!
The grass seed grows fast and thick in shaded areas. There were a couple bare spots which I reseeded. I am extremely happy with the results and have purchased more seed.

Incredible green lawn
I have used many different types of grass seed but this has to be the best for dense shade lawns. It took a little longer than other seed I've used but totally worth the wait.

Decent Grass Seed
I planted three weeks ago and a lot of the seeds have sprouted in my difficult shady area underneath a Norway Maple. So far it's done better than other weed mixes I've tried before. I'm happy with my purchase.

did not work in shady areas which is is supposed to do
this grass seed was for areas of my lawn which on both sides have trees which are dark areas. i have just looked at the growth today and there is hardly any grass there. all in all this was purchased to give growth in my dark areas and it did not do that. it was quite expensive as well .
