Q: can it be trimmed for a waterline?

I gues it depends on where you trim it. The mat has an edge all around that rises about an inch. Presumably that's to contain leaks before they can cause damage to your cabinet. With the right tool you can cut the silicone, but you will lose a lot of that protection. It's still a great mat for keeping things clean. I really like mine.
