Why can't I place my iPad in portrait mode on the stand?

The clip holds the iPad in landscape mode. To switch to portrait, place the iPad in landscape and rotate the stand to the desired orientation. This ensures the iPad is securely held in place.

The holder says it fits up to 13.5", but the clip only opens 9.25". How?

It fits devices 4.7" to 13.5" screen size. The clip holds the width (the shorter side) of the device, which just needs to be ≤ 9.25".

The size is different from what I expected, and the dimensions in the description seem inaccurate.
