Delicious and Easy!
My husband recently fell in love with birria. I wanted to surprise him but didn't have the time to make it the traditional way. These orbs were brilliant!! So easy to use and the end result was delicious!! I am definitely going to keep these in stock at all times! Definitely recommend.

Spice ball for your meat!
Not sure what I had ordered, but I figured it was worth a try. I put these in a slow cooker for about 10 hours with shredded chicken breast. It just worked, added immense flavor while being low in calories. I honestly didn't know if I would like it, but I was pleasantly surprised by the taste. It may not be for everyone due to the spices. The quality is good for a product I'm not too certain of and I found it was probably one of the best spice addition experiences. Ball--ified spices, who would've thought ?!

Turned out really good, super easy to make.
So this was my first time making and even eating Birria, so keep that in mind regarding my overall review and rating. Based on my research before cooking it up, it seems like it went pretty well. I used a hot-pot to speed up my slow-cooking, and followed the instructions on the back of the bag. I chopped the meat into about 3 inch cubes and seared it (in the hot-pot on high saute for ease) on all sides, then I removed the meat to a separate bowl, deglazed the pot with the 6 cups of water, and broke up the orb as I put it in before stirring it up with a fork and smashing it a bit to make sure it was all broken down properly into the stock. After waiting for the 1 hour 45 minutes on the bag and the 20 minute natural release (well, 17 minutes then I vented it) I opened it up to a lovely, potent, scent and a nice red consommé. This is what I expected to see based on research, and let me tell you it was extremely easy to make with that orb. Just chucked it in and broke it up, and that was it. After I removed the meat and shredded it (in like 15 seconds thanks to learning the surprisingly effective life hack of a hand mixer on low), I let the consommé sit for a while and cool off until the golden oil shown in the picture with the spoon separated off. I don't know what it's called, just that it's the fat you use for the outside of your tortillas. I'd recommend honestly just cooling the consommé in the fridge until that fat solidifies, makes it so much easier to separate. Finally I gathered up all the ingredients, shredded some Oaxaca cheese, and cooked it up in a little nonstick pan using that Birria infused fat as the cooking oil, then the consommé as a dip. I don't know how authentic the flavor is to the original, but I can tell you that this Birria bomb packed this dish full of plenty of flavor and was probably one of the best little tacos I've ever had. It also makes a LOT with just that 1 bomb, I've eaten it the last two nights and still got a good week left of it probably...if it lasts that long. Given how much it makes, though of course you have to consider the cost of the other ingredients, I think the $19 for two of them is a good value and definitely worth not having to do all that seasoning yourself. The ingredients seem to list most of the things I see in Birria recipes online, so I think it's a pretty good emulation of the real thing overall.

Very flavor - not exactly authentic but close!
My husband is latino and we love birria and typically buy prepared food versus making it ourselves, so I was very excited to try this 2-Pack of Large Instant Pot Birria Bombs from Spice Orbs. Each bomb is sized for 5 lbs of roast, so we used half a ball on half the meat since there are only 2 of us. Needless to say, this flavor bomb is truly amazing in the consume it produces in a slow cooker. For us, the signature spices for any Mexican dish is comino (cumin) and ancho chile, and this bomb has plenty. I wouldn't say that this is as good as our local restaurant and needs a bit of doctoring for spiciness, but it's SOOOOOO CONVENIENT to be able to make at home with just a pot, water, and meat. We like it a little spicier, so we added a bit more chile to suit our tastebuds. Overall, we can't complain - the ease of this product is a game changer for making home-cooked birria. Yes, it's a pricey product, but remember that this one is a large bomb for 5 lbs of meat, so actually this is a GREAT deal! I would recommend giving this bomb a try if you love birria and have been wanting to make it at home. This has pretty authentic flavoring, albeit a bit muted.

So expensive
I have never had birria, homemade, or otherwise. I have ordered and also prepared barbacoa and other shredded beef. I didn't know how it differed in flavor. I did know that the beef fat was used to fry the tortillas and the broth was used to dip the tacos, and that sounded pretty good. I used a 6 pound roast and according to the directions that meant I should use both bombs. I used the slow cooker and the results were good. The meat was tender and well seasoned. With the roast and the bombs, the cost for the whole pot of meat was nearly $50. We ate tacos for two days. Probably making around 20 regular sized tacos. I froze the rest of the meat but there's enough for another 8 tacos or so. 28 good sized tacos for about $60 (including tortillas and toppings) is a good price when comparing with restaurant prices. I think a 2 taco plate locally is $15. If you look at it that way it is a bargain I guess. I however, prefer my home cooked food to be a little less pricey, there are a lot of birria seasonings on the market and the majority will cost $5 or less for the same amount of food. Should the seasoning cost be about 1/3 of the cost of the whole meal? That seems silly since this doesn't contain anything out of the ordinary, or anything you couldn't purchase off a regular supermarket seasoning aisle. So overall, taste is good, it's easier than making your own blend but you're paying a premium for the novelty of the "bomb". Really what's the point? It dissolves in seconds.
