Can the filters be hand washed?

Washing a carbon filter just washes the carbon off the fabric strands they are bound to. You can’t “wash the odor out.” Those reviewers who do this are just becoming “nose blind” to the odor coming from the bin. If the filter no longer works and it is made of natural material and has no chemical binders, then it’s safe to dispose them by burning or putting them in the landfill. If the fabric is a type of plastic, then it might be recyclable or it will have to go into a landfill.

Can you compost a spent filter or is it meant for the landfill?

We have a compost pile and I would not put it in the compost pile. Landfill or burn it.

How does one replace the filters? i have a utopia stainless steel compostable bin. the filter is inaccessible within a closed system top.

If this is the stainless steel model I purchased remove the lid real up and pinch the cartridge and pull down do the same to replace in reverse.

When i replaced the round filter in the lid, i found a second square filter behind it. do i need to replace the square one as well?

Yes, Epica seems to put the smaller square filter instead of the round filter for the top filter. Saving a few cents I guess. Round works better for top and bottom filters.
