Premier Series of Bond Figures
This is my fourth Big Chief Studio James Bond figure, and it appears I may have gotten it just under the wire. I bought it from a site that specializes in figures, paying the MSRP of $249, but it’s now sold out and the Amazon price is starting to creep up. The price of the Sean Connery Goldfinger figure has exploded in price and is almost unattainable on auction sites. The fabric in Oddjob’s pants feel very authentic, but the jacket and vest are extremely stiff. I assume this is so that they will keep their shape. I did add a little extra padding in the front of the shoulders because the fabric was kind of folding into itself. I never modify my figures, but in this case, I just packed in a little tissue and I think it looks much better. Big Chief Studios continues to be unable to do ties properly. Oddjob’s tie is too narrow and it’s really hard to get it looking correct. I will admit that it’s clearly a hand tied knot so that’s cool. His lapel should have a sharp edge but mine is raggedy and if I really was into modifying my figures, I would probably trim it.Just as with the Auric Goldfinger figure, the body is padded to give it its bulk. Oddjob isn’t as rotund as Goldfinger, so there isn’t as much padding but the thighs, for example, have a fair amount of soft padding on the quadriceps over a hard frame. Between the padding and the stiff suit, the articulation is severely hampered, and his arms are held out a significant distance from his body. I generally place all my figures on a shelf in a neutral position, but if you want to put him into an action pose you may be disappointed.Figure companies struggle to make hats that fit on a figures head comfortably, but BCS manages to pull it off. The hat sits beautifully on Oddjob’s head and doesn’t look the least bit oversized. By contrast, the shoes are done with minimal effort. Some companies will go to the effort of creating separate laces but BCS always uses a single plastic mold for shoes that barely look better than a Barbie dolls shoes. Overall, I’ll give the outfit a solid grade given the price of the figure. I’m not sure why BCS can’t get ties and collars right but that was also my experience with other figures from the company.BCS has managed to perfectly capture Harold Sakata’s face (circa 1964). The only issue I have is that since Big Chief Studios only every creates a single sculpt per figure, I kind of wish they didn’t use such a blank expression. I know that Oddjob was a stoic character, but he did have a few expressions and the sculpt makes him look disinterested. Still, you could barely ask for a more dead on reproduction of Oddjob. This figure now completes my Goldfinger trio and they look awesome together. Hopefully, the Dr No James Bond will be coming out later this year along with the Doctor himself. Nothing else James Bond related is currently on the schedule from Big Chief Studios and although none of the figures are without flaws, I will continue to pick them up as long as BCS continues to produce them.
