Aqueon PRO QuietFlow Aquarium Power Filter Size 20, Up to 30 Gallons

I actually bought this filter in the used/refurbish section on Amazon after months of searching for the right filter for my new aquarium, 10 gallon tank. Despite I bought it used this filter work like a charm! Here is a mini breakdown: Performance: Powerful. The pump was so strong that I ended up making a baffled to restrict some of the water flow but even then the water can be seen rippling through the surface. Not only is the pump strong but it is quiet as well, really live up to its name "QuietFlow". Occasionally some small water dripping and humming from the motor can be heard but you have to be right in front of the tank to notice it. This filter is also self priming, which mean that you do not have to pour water in the filter to get the filter to work and move the water flow. I found this a bonus, since I always unpluged my filter to do water changes. And every time without a failure when I plug it back in, the filter just automatically do its job and within seconds, water is already pouring out and silently too! Design: Bulky but functional. Its looks a bit big but will fit quiet nicely on the glass panel without any falling or sliding problem. If you have a 10 gallon tank with a standard hood, the 20 or 10 version will fit on the tank with the hood on just fine as well. The intake tube is adjustable meaning you can slide it up/down. Inside the filter there is some room for additional filter medias beside the one it originally come with. There is also 2 plastic meshes that help with aerating the water (you can see it in the picture, it is the blue thing) and store the beneficial bacteria. There is also a resting place on the side of the filter for the cord so it wont be hanging out unnecessary in your tank. Additionally, all parts on the filter including the propeller, and intake tube can be taken out and clean or wash if necessary. Con: Unfortunately with everything there has to be a drawback. The problem however, are really small and aren't really consider much of a nuisance. I found that the cover/cap of the filter do shake sometimes, especially when you open it and don't close it properly. This created a very loud rattling noise, which can be easily fix by closing it properly or use a rubber band to bind it securely down. Another thing was since the pump is so strong, it would be nice to have an adjustable option to restrict the water flow, but sadly there is none. A tip: If you decided to have live plants in your aquarium that have spiky leaves, especially the Hornwort, the falling leaves can get suck up by the filter and create a blockage overtime. So monitor this. Overall I have had this filter for over 3 months now and it is still going strong and keeping my aquarium super clean without any problem. I couldn't be happier with this filter.

I was apprehensive about buying this because of multiple reviews stating that it just stopped working & was garbage. As more of the reviews were positive and the price was right, I took a chance on it. & while this filter is a little more touchy than others that I've had, I've found that mine only needs is a little troubleshooting & servicing to get going again and I assume that some people who have had issues with it simply didn't know what to do. Easiest troubleshooting tip if it stops working is to make sure that the tank has enough water in it. The square motor housing must be partially submerged in order for it to work, so that the tube is all the say in the water. But that isn't usually the problem with mine, it's just the easiest. The usual culprit when mine stops working is that the motor needs some TLC and it's really easy enough to take care of. First unplug the filter & remove it from your tank. Unclip the motor housing from the filter body (clip is located under the water output shelf) and take it off. Plug it in & turn it upside down... most likely you'll see like a 3-cogged wheel not spinning; this probably means it needs cleaning. So take the bottom off of the motor housing. That should-be-spinny thing pulls right out, so go ahead & do it. The top part of that has a magnet & it may have some stuff on it, so wipe it off. The hole you pulled it out of may also have some stuff in it & I use a wet cotton swab to clean this out. That should be enough. To test it, I put the thingy back in the hole and put the bottom back on the motor housing and then plug it in. The wheel should spin again... it makes a weird sound if you have it upside-down to look & see if the wheel is indeed spinning, turn it back the way it would be if it was attached. If it stops making noise, great, but if it's still making loud noises, it probably needs a little lube. So take the bottom off again, pull out the spinny contraption again & put a little lube on the metal pin inside the hole. Put it back together & test it again. Hopefully I've solved any problems at this point... if not, you're having a problem that I haven't & I apologize for wasting your time going through these steps for nothing. ;) As for an actual review: it's a filter... it seems to do its job just fine. It is a little touchy, but I like that it can all be disassembled easily to clean it all out.

What Can I Say? THESE HOB FILTERS JUST KEEP GOING ON AND ON AND ON!! I purchased two of these HOB filters on January 19, 2021 and they’re both going strong. I’ve never had a problem with them and am contemplating purchasing two more so when I need to clean them, I’ll already have clean ones to put back on my aquariums. One of the better purchases I’ve made for my SPECIES-ONLY AQUARIUMS!!!

Best investment! Easy set up and can’t hear a thing. It is very quiet! Have this for my 10 gallon tank and it keeps the tank clean for a month.

This pump lasted for 2 months and has quit working again! Not buying another one.

I have only had the filter running for a few hours but I thought I would give Top Fin aquarium owners a heads up. The filter doesn't fit the Top Fin 29 gallon aquariums very well because the plastic rim is thicker then the filter is designed for. I had to shove extra filter padding between the rim and the spill over to keep the filter level and it elevated further then it should be but works. If you also have the lid that comes with the kit this creates a problem with water spilling out on the lid so I had to adjust the lid further forward so the water spills back into the tank. Filter works fine with my jerry rigging but Top Fin 29 gallon kit owners might want to give this filter a pass and look at other options. I'm primarily using it as a polishing filter since my biological filtration is an under gravel filter. I wanted a polishing filter with motor designed to sit below the water and no skimmer. A skimmer completely unneeded in my freshwater setup and can cause excessive noise when debris and floating plants get sucked into the skimmer. These filters run almost completely silent other then the flow of water sound. Self primes almost instantly within 3-5 seconds. My only complaint is it doesn't mesh well with the Top Fin 29 gallon aquarium and lid (that comes with the 29 gallon kit).

I have never been so disappointed in an aquarium product. I purchased two of these filters, months apart, and both suffered identical, sudden pump failures. This is a clear and persistent design flaw. To make matters worse, the entire unit is disposable. When the filter cartridge is dirty, you are forced to buy a whole new unit—including another unreliable pump. This is a wasteful and expensive cycle. A product that fails at its primary function (pumping water) and then forces you to re-purchase its own flawed design is unacceptable. I strongly urge you to look for a more reliable and sustainable option. A complete letdown.

The product came assembled and in great condition. I rinsed the dust from the filters and set it up. The self priming feature is awesome! Once the water started running through, my husband and I noticed how fantastically quiet this filter was compared to our last one!! I'm sure the fish are loving this too :) I had just finished scraping some green algae off of the tank glass and within an hour of running the filter the water had cleared up. I have been running the filter for only a day now, but so far, we are extremely happy with this product.

This is my favorite brand of hang over back filter, because it starts on its own after a power failure! I ended up getting one for each of my tanks because of this! You don’t have to pour water into it repeatedly to get started like some other models. My unit arrived in perfect shape thankfully. There’s a bit of a design issue with the plastic being quite thin. The housing for the impeller is held on by plastic clasps which over time can weaken and break off, that’s what happened to my old unit but I’m still using it!
