Charlie Parker Played Be Bop

If you are going to read Charlie Parker Played Be Bop you need to read it like you are swinging through a jazz club tooting your horn, stomping your feet, and bopping to the beat. It would be great if you could read this to students with a bit of a tune in your heart as you read over the words. This is one of our children's favorite books and one that their grandfather used to read to them when they were little.

Being an elementary music educator, I am always looking for ways to help my students make real world connections, and pictures books like Charlie Parker Played Be Bop help me achieve that.

there are not many children's books that celebrate jazz, so I was pleasantly surprised when I saw this book for sale. I play jazz music (parker, monk, coleman, coltrane, etc) for my daughter and I hope she will at least appreciate jazz if not love it when she is older. The book reads somewhat like a jazz rift with lots of sounds and perceptions. My daughter is only 5 months old but she smiles and swings her arms with delight as I read this to her. you definitely have to act out the sounds to get the full effect of the book. get this book for your little one!

I bought this book intentionally of illustrations, but the text feel of this book

One of our absolute favorite books. Don't listen to the reviews that say it's poorly written. They just don't get it. We read this book as a sound poem. It's fun, it gets stuck in your head in the best way. We quote it all the time, even if it doesn't make a lot of sense. Read it to your kiddo. Gift to friends :)

my kid loves it because i sing it to her

This book introduces jazz to a young audience. It explores the sounds, rhythms, and emotions of the genre through colorful pictures and rhythmic words similar to the beat of "scat" singing. Lots of the words are there just for the sound of them. By focusing on the sound words, students could develop spelling strategies that help them move from phonemes, the sounds they make, to graphemes, the written representations of those sounds.

Great book to teach kids that they can create their own melody out of any words.

I bought this as a Christmas present for my 3 1/2 yr old. It was extremely confusing for her and me! I was really hoping to have a good review especially after reading all the lovely ones but sadly not. Huge waste of money !

I had a great time reading this book to my elementary music classes and then playing some Be-Bop for them all.

This was what I consider to be absolute rubbish. It was a cardboard picture as shown on the right , and that was it !! Not even a printed history of the great revolutionary man , who changed the thinking of nearly every serious musician in Jazz and Classical music. Disgusted Bill Doran
