Watchmen: Ultimate Cut

An outstanding film
When I first saw this film in the cinemas the detail was incredible. The opening scene alone with the Bob Dylan soundtrack is awe inspiring and, from my opinion, is still one of the best title scenes of a film ever. Although the film does not religiously follow the graphic novel it does bring the high level of story telling to life. I would highly recommend you see this film if you have not already

watching the watchmen
Classic graphic novel Watchmen considers what it would be like to be a superhero in a real world, and what would make people want to become one. one of thsoe books that you can read again and again and still notice something new each time, it also includes text pages. So it was considered to be unfilmable. quite a few big name directors tried and failed to bring it to the movie screen. But now zack snyder has succeeded.the story is set in 1985, but not quite in the world that we know. history has played out rather differently here, and richard nixon is in his fourth term as us president.costumed vigliantes were outlawed in 1976, and the latest generation of heroes, who took over after those who emerged in the 1940's, have either retired or now work for the government or still operate. outside the law. when one is killed, the survivors find a conspiracy that goes further than they could possibly imagine. Can you get into this film if you've never read the book? Not sure if I can't answer that question as I have read it. If you haven't then you will need to be prepared to use your intelligence and pay close attention to everything that is going on. this is not a film where you can sit back and let it do everything for you. You need to think for yourself. If you have read it, then you'll find a movie that is as close to the source material as it is possible to get in it's 155 minute running time. you will also find the most violent movie you've seen in a long time. but this isn't gratuitious violence or hollywood style gore. it's realistic. And there are fight scenes that are stunningly well coreographed. There is one attempted rape scene which may prove too much for some, but again it's not gratuitious.A thinking persons movie and a visual version of a classic graphic novel. It's a memorable and bold cinematic experience.this is the two disc edition of the dvd. the first disc has one single extra, a sixteen minute documentary in which a man who was a science advisor on the project discusses some of the science and technology seen in the story and how accurate it is. this is a rather fast whistle stop tour through such things but it's fascinating with it.the only language track on the disc is english.the subtitles are english danish finnish norwegian and swedish.disc two has a language track in english and subtitles in english dutch french german italian spanish and turkish.the extras are: a thirty minute look at the graphic novel and the phenomenon it became and how much it influenced the movie. it's an engrossing watch and those who've read the book will spot some clips in here from scenes that didnt make the cinema cut.real life vigilanties is a twenty five minute long documentary about those who have taken the law into their own hands in real life. an excellent documentary that considers the issues involved this offers real food for thought.there are eleven watchmen video diaries. these are short features about elements of the production. all run two to four minutes. they're brief but very watchable.there's a nightly news report from a tv channel seen in the film. running roughly three minutes and seen in faux 1970's style it's a nice little addition.there's the music video for a song by the group my chemical romance called desolation row which features on the soundtrack. this is short in the 1980's style seen in the movie but the video bears no other relation to it and whether you like the song depends on whether you like this kind of music.watching this disc on a pc and moving the pointer over the screen at the bottom of the special features will reveal a hidden symbol in the shape of that on dr manhattans forehead. click on this to see an easter egg, which is an advert in 1970's style advising people that vigilantes are outlawed and what to do if they see one. this is a decent little item and worth a look.so it's not the best extras wise but some of them are worth a look. that and the quality of the movie makes me rate this as a 5/5, but it does appear there will be a directors cut and then an ultimate edition along in due course. it remains in question at the moment whether the former will come to region two dvd. so do consider whether or not you want to be patient before getting this.

Directors cut review
I know a number of people are trying to decide whether to order the Directors cut from the states, or to make do with the British theatrical cut. It's a little hard to do when you've no idea which is better. Well thankfully ive been able to see the Directors cut version and here's what I think.Essentially, most of the extra running time is made up of 5 seconds here and 10 seconds there. The most prominent additions are, a battle scene with the original Nightowl when thugs go to his home. This is superbly merged with flashbacks of fights from his heyday. As a result of this the bar scene with Nightowl and Rorschach is extended. I did enjoy this violent scene but I can see why it was cut, it didnt really fit in with Nightowls character at all, neither did Rorschach's reaction come to think of it.There are extended/extra scenes of Rorschach without his mask as he watches his fellow Watchmen. He's much more prominent at the funeral and we see him taking his "face" out of a dumpster after watching Daniel. I imagine these scenes were removed as it takes away any mystique of who Rorschach is under the mask.Laury has a few extra/extended scenes, and almost a subplot where the FBI are always keeping tabs on here to ensure Dr Manhatten is kept happy. Also, there are a few moments of extra gore, which is always nice. We see more footage of the newspaper stand where a young man is reading the Tales of the Black Freighter comic. Overall though, the rest is mainly an extra line here and there. A few are superb, others not so worthy. Rorschach is certainly the main beneficiary of these added scenes, and seeing as he was most peoples favourite, thats not a bad thing. Is it worth importing though? If your a Watchmen fan then yes, go buy it and im sure you'll love it, theres enough added there to make you happy. If your a film fan though? I wouldnt say the extra scenes made the movie any better to be honest, but I couldnt say they made it any worse either. While some of the extra moments were good, just as many felt out of place or unneccessary, not to mention the movie now runs over 3 hours long. I enjoyed it, but I could easily live with the Directors cut and the deleted scenes on a bonus disc.Ive tried not to spoil the new scenes for everyone, but hopefully theres enough info here for you to make up your own mind on which version to go for.

Incontournable version longue

Fascinating Movie!
"Watchmen (Director's Cut)" is a masterful cinematic adaptation of the acclaimed graphic novel by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons, skillfully helmed by director Zack Snyder. Here's a review:Faithful Adaptation: Snyder's director's cut remains faithful to the source material, capturing the dark, complex, and morally ambiguous world of the original graphic novel. Fans of the comic will appreciate the attention to detail and the reverence with which the story is treated.Expanded Narrative: Clocking in at over three hours, the director's cut allows for a more expansive exploration of the Watchmen universe, delving deeper into the characters' backstories and motivations. This extended runtime enriches the viewing experience, providing greater context and depth to the story.Visual Spectacle: As expected from Snyder, the film is a visual feast, with stunning cinematography, intricate production design, and visceral action sequences. From the gritty streets of New York City to the otherworldly landscapes of Mars, every frame is meticulously crafted and visually arresting.Compelling Performances: The ensemble cast delivers strong performances across the board, bringing the iconic characters of the Watchmen to life with depth and nuance. Standout performances include Jackie Earle Haley as the morally ambiguous Rorschach and Billy Crudup as the enigmatic Dr. Manhattan.Themes and Subtext: "Watchmen" explores complex themes such as power, identity, morality, and the nature of heroism, inviting viewers to ponder the ethical dilemmas faced by its flawed and morally ambiguous characters. The film's rich subtext and thought-provoking themes elevate it beyond the confines of a typical superhero movie.Director's Vision: Snyder's directorial vision shines through in every frame of the film, imbuing it with his trademark style and visual flair. While some may find his approach divisive, there's no denying the ambition and creativity on display in "Watchmen."Overall, "Watchmen (Director's Cut)" is a compelling and visually stunning adaptation that does justice to its source material while offering a fresh perspective on the iconic graphic novel. With its rich storytelling, strong performances, and breathtaking visuals, it stands as a worthy addition to the pantheon of superhero cinema.
