At the Beach (National Geographic Kids Readers, Pre-Reader)

I got this book for my child (6 y/o) because he is learning how to read higher than beginner level. I love these books because they tie in science and other interesting information into the reading so its a win-win! Learning something new while building on important skills like reading is amazing.

This is a book with beautiful pictures of different beaches. There are not many words on each page. The only reason I didn't give it a 5-star review is because it was rated as a "pre-reader" book, but the words are not easy. There are some multi-syllable words such as "seaweed" and "changing" and "different" as well as one syllable words that are more advanced than "pre-reader" such as "smooth" and "beach." This book does a nice job of describing a beach, but I would rate it more for kinders to 2nd grade. I woud definitely recommend. The labeling of "pre-reader" just didn't seem to be accurate.

Bought this for my son ahead of his first beach vacation. He's excited about the beach now, and I'm glad I can turn it into a fun learning lesson in addition to a vacation.

Beautiful photographs really caught the kids' attention and started a lot of great conversations. I love books for kids that show realistic illustrations instead of cutesy illustrations.

So does require some support as doesn’t follow UK phonics schemes but great to have some real information that is pretty decodable
