Might be overkill, but it should do the job.

I assume you're talking about a AR-15. It will certainly grip it without leaving gouge marks. However, if the barrel guard requires a lot of torque to remove I'd suggest using "Knocker Loose" to free up any corrosion on the threads prior to any attempt to remove the guard.

Mine appears to be some type of woven nylon material. The strap is 1" wide.

Q: does this work on aluminium car parts?

Sure it does! Only the nylon strap touches the thing you need unscrewed so its good for plastic, glass or aluminum. It is typically used for water or oil filter casings for instance.
