Inspired by a heartbreaking true story, this poignant novel tells of one woman’s brave fight for love, life, and hope during a time of unimaginable darkness in WWII Germany, perfect for readers of The Tattooist of Auschwitz. Auschwitz, 1943: As I held the tiny baby in my arms, my fingers traced the black tattoo etched across her little thigh. And I prayed that one day this set of numbers, identical to her mother’s, would have the power to reunite a family torn apart by war … Ana Kaminski is pushed through the iron gates of Auschwitz beside her frightened young friend Ester Pasternak. As they reach the front of the line, Ana steps forward and quietly declares herself a midwife―and Ester her assistant. Their arms are tattooed, and they’re ordered to the maternity hut. Holding an innocent newborn baby, Ana knows the fate of so many are in her hands, and vows to do everything she can to save them. When two guards in their chilling SS uniforms march in and snatch a blond-haired baby from its mother, it’s almost too much for Ana to bear. Consoling the distraught woman, Ana realizes amidst the terrible heartache there is a glimmer of hope. The guards are taking the healthiest babies and placing them with German families, so they will survive. And there are whispers the war is nearly over… Ana and Ester begin to secretly tattoo little ones with their mother’s numbers, praying one day they might be reunited. Then, early one morning, Ana notices the small bump under Ester’s thin, striped clothing … Review: intriguing - I have always enjoyed books set pre, during and post WW2. This is a beautifully written but heart wrenching book. It is so descriptive that I felt immersed in the story. I cried a few times. I rated it 4 stars because there were things that went unanswered and ends that weren’t tied up, thats just hard as a reader but it does fit considering all the people who were left without answers in the wake of the war. The people who found ways to help eachother and fight back in such terrible circumstances were so inspirational. I would definitely recommend this book. Review: Wow - Great read and could not put it down! I’m not a big reader but this book was really good and well written

Hard book to read but important
I have always been drawn to books set to pre-WW2, during and post. This is a beautifully written but heart wrenching book. I read it within 2 days unable to put my phone down, the writing style is so descriptive that I felt I was 100% immersed in the story. I felt as if I was standing in the Block, watching the entire story unfold. I only rated it 4 stars because there were things that went unanswered and ends that weren’t tied up, and as a reader I absolutely hate that. But it does fit considering most individuals were left without answers in the wake of the war. I would definitely recommend this book. PLEASE READ TRIGGER WARNINGS!

History becomes real
I am enthralled with the Call the Midwife television series. I have now been reading stories of World War 2 and midwifery. I started this one and had a harder time getting started with it. But so very good reading it. it brought thoughts of my husband's Grandmother. she was sent to America from Poland during WW2. Her family stayed in Poland. she never saw her family again. The horror of life in Poland during WW2 is not what I learned in History class. This is something I hopes never happens in this world again. If we all were reminded of the horrors hopefully they would not happen again anywhere. The book is well written and the story comes to life. The Catholic woman was easy to identify with, but so was the young Jewish woman Ester. The horrors in their town and at the camp are easily understood. The coming home from camp and the sadness and happiness of trying to build a life again are not often thought about but I can let my imagination try to relate to some times during my life. But never comes close to their daily hell. enjoy this book!

Great but distressing story
I liked the strength of the women. Despite all the horrors they kept their dignity and faith 🙏. The holocaust and all it's evil should never be forgotten ♥️ This history should be taught in every high school and college.

The Midwife of Auschwitz - amazing
I very rarely give a 5 star to any book. It has to be a really good book that is beautifully written and one in which I cannot put down. This was one of those books. The two main characters are Ana and Ester and their journey from Poland to a concentration camp. Ana is the midwife and Ester is Jewish. The author does an amazing job of bringing to life the horrors of WWII and the concentration camps. There are parts that made me cry, made me laugh, and truly torn at my heartstrings. I don’t like to give away any spoilers when I write a review, I want the reader to be surprised and hopefully compelled to read a book like this. We need to always remember our history. It is important that we don’t forget and that we remember the real history, not something made up to make someone feel better, is what should be taught.

Emotional.
I’ve just now finished this true story of The Midwife of Auschwitz. I’ve read many over the years and this is up there with this best. Of course it was emotional and at times heartbreaking. Hope was everything to some who were fortunate to have found ways to survive. Barely and through immense struggles but survive they did. The next book in this series is with me but I will save it for another time. I am exhausted from ‘watching’ this in my mind’s eye.

Need Kleenex
If you haven't read this book yet, do it! You won't regret it. Just make sure you have kleenex nearby when you do. Every moment was an emotional rollercoaster, fueled along by hope. Inspired by a true story, Anna Stuart created a world that not only shared the horrors of what transpired during Nazi rule but shimmered with the glow of hope and freedom. She brought to life Ana and Ester as they formed a bond that would be unbreakable. From the first page to the last, you are left not wanting to close the book, but to know what is going to happen next, and will everyone be alright. This novel is going to stick with me for a long time.

A heartbreaking yet heartwarming story.
This is the heartbreaking story of two polish women sent to Auschwitz, during the second world war, Ester, because she is Jewish and Ana because she is accused of resistance against the Nazi regime. Ana is a midwife and Ester a trainee midwife. Ester got married to Filip shortly before her arrest, Ana is married with three grown up sons. The families are torn apart, Ester and Ana do not know if their families are dead or alive. The reader is transported in the darkest, most evil times in history. Whilst in Auschwitz, Ana and Ester end up helping pregnant women give birth in terrible circumstances. Most babies are drowned as soon as they are born, some are left to die of malnutrition. The blond babies are taken away from their mothers to be given to German families. It is truly heartbreaking. How can anybody survive witnessing such cruelty? Then, Ana and Ester come up with a plan to try and save some of the babies. They are showing such bravery and empathy risking their lives by putting their plan into action that it does restore some faith in human nature. A book inspired from true events which will leave all readers moved to tears. A book everybody should read to remind themselves of the horrors of the war and the bravery some people showed during the darkest times.

Emotional
It is my first reading a book about war and honestly it is a piece of art. I really like the realism of the story and the storyline is really not for weak hearted people.
