what is chitin?

Chitin is most commonly recognizable as the hard whitish parts of a crab shell although it is one of the the main substances in many exoskeletons (creatures that are hard on the outside-- like crabs, lobsters and many insects-- have exoskeletons rather than internal bones).

Question 2

When putting a plant in the ground, should this be put around the roots or near the top of the soil? All tips appreciated!

Hi there, we generously applied the shells to the top of the soil of our raised beds and then tilled in to a depth of about 6-8". We found that this product really helped us with the calcium deficiency we were having here in Colorado, causing end-rot on our tomatoes and peppers. I think we will try applying it around the base of our plants as needed  (after big rain events) next year too because, even though it helped tremendously, a few of our plants still had some problems. I think either application of the shells, around roots or top, will work, depending on the severity and nature of your problem or your fertilizing needs. Hope this helps a little.

I assume the crab has been cooked in some way before the shell is removed.  Does anyone know how the shell is processed?

I doubt it's been processed. It's simply crushed crab and crab shell. Smells like it too. Ingredients: Crushed crab and crab shell.
