Description says "32 khz rtc real time clock crystal", photos show 8mhz crystal. which is the official implementation and what do you actually get?

Both. The black chip next to the crystal is the real time clock. The 8MHz crystal stabilizes the CPU clock.

Photo shows gnd on pins 3&4 but on the devices i received, gnd is shown on pins 5&6. which is correct? i cannot connect to my target.

first invest in a multimeter and learn how to use it. second, the blue pill has three grounds as labeled on PCB, "G". In addition download the blue pill doc which will show you how to connect. you should also note that the cpu pins do not match the connector pins. If you put power on a ground pin, it's probably toast. it's good that they are so dirt cheap. this all assumes you have a "generic" board. Your ST-Link may also have a problem. good luck...
