Perfect Walkthrough
After combing through a good number of beginners books on HTML & CSS, this book is certainly the best one. I walked into coding a complete novice, knowing only how to create bare bone pages. After I finished the book, I knew how to create a fully functional and visually delightful website.Ian Lloyd walks the user through the basic nuts and bolts of a website, all the way to an aesthetically pleasing design. In many ways, the author goes beyond the "how-to" approach, by encompassing useful tips and background info, as well as access to webfiles and other helpful resources. The pages are fully laid out with pictures and code mark-up, chapter by chapter, on how to accomplish specific tasks.Even if you're not a beginner, the book serves as an excellent resource with a detailed index and up to date information on HTML5 & CSS3.Go for it.

Practical but flawed
This book satisfied my need to learn what CSS is all about and how to use it. It took me step by step through building a nicely complex website. It also gave many explanations as to why good coding was important. My main criticism was it often showed what code to write for CSS but seldom showed a full page. Position on the page is of great importance in CSS I found, but the book showed what to add but not always where on the page to add it. There was reference to web based examples which I found to be a slow and sometimes irritating process. As a result I found various operations sometimes didn't work. The only solution was to go back and go through it again.Generally I found that the book gives excellent grounding but needs more full page examples of the CSS file for a tyro like me.For value the book is great. I enquired locally about face to face tuition in basic coding and was quoted $1,500.00

Well Worth It
I really learned a lot reading this book and was able to turn around and publish a basic web site using HTML and CSS right away. The book is an easy read and has lots of samples in it so you can easily see how things work with no other references needed. Great to read on an airplane or in bad at night no need to have a computer or other material in order to learn.

It's easy to follow and comprehensive
I find myself recommending this book all the time to aspiring web developers. It's easy to follow and comprehensive. After recommending this to a graphic designer, they went from no knowledge of HTML to being able to build a simple website. It's great for visual learners.Ignore the social media chapters since they are very outdated.

Good read! Warning
Jesus this book is the easiest read and I learned so much from it. I just, got everything they were saying, and if not I followed the instructions/tutorials and it became clear. Good read! Warning, can be a tad bit corny lol

A bit dated
Overall, it's a great book. I've used it to teach basic high school web development. However it would really benefit with a revision with all of the new benefits of HTML5. They're hinted at in the book, but now HTML5 tags are commonplace.

Great book but the Kindle formatting makes it unreadable
I bought this for my iPad and found that all the text is bold and the formatting is horrendous. I returned the book and bought the ePub version from Sitepoint directly. I compared the two and the difference is night and day. Amazon: please pay a little more attention to your formatting. It makes for a very, very poor experience.

Very helpful, Good guide lines for the new HTML/XTML
Very helpful. made creating the website a real breeze. Showed me the updated XTML language since I had not written any since the 90's and things had changed considerable since then, with more techniques available to put the Pizzazz in a webpage.

Excellent Organization of Steps and Instruction for Website Design!
As a blogger who uses Wordpress.org, I am interested in learning more about web design so I can have more control over my website. This book far surpassed my expectations. It's direct, clear and is written at a very accessible level. I am easily able to apply the concepts and ideas addressed in each chapter. Further, the organization of it is excellent. Ian Lloyd makes logical steps in his pathway for teaching how to build your own website. Although I purchased several website design books along with this one, I quickly realized his is the only one a person really needs. Therefore, I would recommend anyone who classifies himself/herself as between beginner and intermediate level with regard to web design purchase this book.

Excellent guide.
Excellent book. All you need to know to get started in web design. Even better if you attend a course in HTML and CSS.
