Giraffe Tools Ground-Mounted Retractable Heavy Duty Hose Reel,1/2" x 82FT

I had a hose with a manual reel that came with my house when I bought. It was such a pain (literally) to unwind and wind, it had kinks, it leaked, I avoided using my hose until absolutely necessary. I have a pool and needed to add some water and I wanted to also clean some patio furniture. I decided to look into a new hose and saw these retractable ones that had to be mounted on your house. I didn't want to do that. Luckily, I came across ground mounted ones. Some are on a singular stake, with the unit off the ground. While ideal for lawn mowing, that didn't seem stable. I was pleased to find this ground mounted one with 4 stakes and a platform that is screwed into the ground. Installation was fairly simple. I placed it in the most convenient location, but the ground was soft where I placed 2 of the stakes. I secured those with J-shaped rebar stakes. The unit is secure enough. It swivels and stays put when pulling out and using the hose. I have used the hose now a few times. IT IS GREAT! It easily pulls out and the magic when it retracts makes it worth the money. I turn off the water. Lightly tug and slowly guide the hose back to the unit to squeeze out more water and to not damage the hose or unit. Unreeling and reeling now takes less than a minute with no stress or pain from trying to hand crank an unruly hose. I regret that I waited this long to buy this hose! I will be sad if it doesn't last or breaks, but I will update my review if I encounter any problems.

I’m giving it 10 stars. I bought the 130’ retractable hose and first off, it’s compact easy to assemble, and sticks in the ground great extends and retracts with ease. Also, it’s elegant and looks beautiful in the garden. Pictured below, is a Northern Catalpa tree I had started from seed last year. It kept getting ignored because I simply couldn’t reach it to water it. Half eaten by whatever decided to because I don’t pay much attention to it. Now, with the hose at max 130’ extension, I can water this tree with the rinse option on the included nozzle spray which is 25’ away! I’m incredibly impressed and forever thankful because now I can water the entire perimeter of my property and really get started on a garden. Thank you so much, it’s a great product.

Love this hose reel. I used to dread yard work because I have plants/ flowers all over my back yard and it was such a pain having to lug the hose all around and then fight with pulling it back in and wrapping it up once I was done. This is soooo much easier. You just pull it out to the length you want, give it a little tug to make it stay, then give it another little tug when you want it to reel back in. I will say, it goes fast when it reels back in so be careful with that or the hose may whack you in the leg (found this out the hard way). I knocked a star off only because the hose cannot be changed out. But that’s a minor detail and not a deal breaker. I also love that I didn’t have to drill holes into my house or fence post. It was super easy to install, just set it on the ground where you want it and hammer in the 4 spikes. I can now enjoy tending to my plants and flowers again.

I’ve been using this hose reel for about a year now, and I absolutely love it. The hose reel has held up really well, and the retraction mechanism still works perfectly with no issues. It’s convenient, easy to use, and keeps the hose neatly organized. After a full year of use, I’m very happy with the quality and durability. Definitely recommend!

I really wanted to like this one. I have been looking for a retractable garden hose reel that mounts in the ground, and I don't see many options out there. I got the one that is around 100 ft long. The reel lasted about 2 weeks. After several uses, the retractable mechanism stopped working properly. It would not fully retract the garden hose. Since I did not keep the original box and I also needed a garden hose to keep watering the newly seeded lawn, I contacted Amazon to send me a replacement before I ship back the original unit. Amazon's customer service was amazing, and they shipped a replacement unit right away. I installed the new unit and shipped the original unit back, only to find out that the replacement unit was even more defective. :( Now Amazon tells me that I have to purchase a 3rd unit, and then ship back the 2nd one. Apparently, there is an investigation of why this is happening twice and they won't send me a replacement like they did the first time. These suffer from a bad design 1) while waiting for the 2nd replacement, I decided to see if I could fix the first one and make it wind back up. I noticed that the internal parts are all plastic. The hose goes out of the enclosure through a white plastic guide that moves left and right along a horizontal axle. The white plastic guide plays an important role of winding the hose neatly so it fits inside the enclosure. Without this mechanism, the hose will wind up all in the center of the reel and it will become a large "ball" that will not fit inside the enclosure. The problem is that the white guide moves left/right when the horizontal axis rotates. The rotation comes from a plastic belt on the right that is attached to a small white gear wheel. That plastic belt falls off the little gear very easily and it stops rotating the entire mechanism. The fix is simple - use your fingers to guide the belt back on the gear. But it will fall off again after a few days, so you have to keep doing that all the time. 2) When I got the second replacement hose, the same issue was happening but pretty much every time I used the hose. After further investigation, I noticed that the right side of the black plastic reel is deformed, and as it rotates when pulling/retracting the hose, it makes contact with the same white belt and pushes it off the small gear - again disabling that entire mechanism. This is a classic example of a good product, with a somewhat good design but poor execution. Cheap parts that bent easily, there is a lot of play, and they need to redesign that gear so the white belt cannot slide off of it.

This is a remarkably well-made product. It was boxed well and each piece is sturdy and well made. It does have to be secured to the ground, but they provided lawn stakes and also concrete screws for whatever works best for your situation. I had someone help me secure the Hose Reel into my backyard deck today and I can't wait to use it.

Very helpful, easy to use, and I would suggest it to 99% of uses. It makes simple jobs easy. The only downfall so far is the water pressure isn't as high as a regular hose, but it's plenty for me & my uses, definitely worth it so far. Time will tell if the longevity, I've only had it a couple months so far.

The hose is high quality and the housing is good. However, the nozzle has a leak along the hand due to a split in the plasic. It's only been 11 months. Can I return the nozzle only?

Just leaked water everywhere, tried to get it to stop but no joy. Wouldn’t recommend.

The portion of the hose that connects to the water source leaked so this was returned. The hose itself is light and did not kink.
