Cambridge Latin Course Book 5 Student's Book 4th Edition

I used these books at school in the 70's ( I say books but they were actually a large number of single stage booklets) but really didn't get much from the experience. I started relearning latin in May and used a lot of intensive courses, which got my grammar up to spec very quickly.BUT the Cambridge course is marvelous, very vocab based, and that is probably the most important aspect of a language. (You can't say much with grammar, but much with words)Syntax is dealt with in an effective and not over fussy way, just enough for the student to be able to read the texts. The series is aimed at secondary school students which is evident from the written style of the background information into the Roman way of life etc it's still very enjoyable for older students, either as a course per se, or as an enjoyable simple reader. I also bought the discs directly from Cambridge, my bedtime listening. My only negative is that two weeks after buying books 4and5, I lost them on a train between London and Liverpool. I was devastated. I don't live in the UK and will have to wait quite a while until I'll be able to replace them. The texts are available on the Cambridge latin course site. I have bought all the 5 CLC Latin course books, to replace the previous editions that I used for taking Latin GCSE. The earlier editions date back to the early 70's, and although the basic learning elements have not altered, this collection is a fine achievement. They do not feel like textbooks to me, but are old friends, so my replacing them with these newer versions is praise indeed for what is a wonderful course.So much care has been taken in providing this Fourth Edition, with its general layout, and almost exquisite attention to detail and presentation.I am one of the first people in the country to have taken Latin GCSE as an Independent Learner with the Cambridge School Classics Project in 2003. This was as a result of a pilot project to encourage expansion of learning the Classics. I would highly recommend their distance learning programme for GCSE. I understand that now both AS and A2 levels can be taken.A course to be highly praised

I rated books 1, 2, 3 and 4 as *****. Whilst appreciating this book needs to have more advanced learning, I found the content boring at times. Given how interesting the stories in book 4 had been, this was disappointing. Good preparation though for GCSE Latin language.

Brilliant home-learn course with an online site for help and suggestions. These books make Latin fun to learn and, as far as I can tell, carefully and thoroughly cover the subject. The course is well designed and each book comprehensively coves its subject. There are fun illustrative pen sketches, a word list to revise at the end of each chapter. Text in English covering the history or aspects of Roman life discussed in each chapter and a clearly set out resume of the grammar at the back, ending with a dictionary of words used. Cannot recommend this course highly enough. it is great fun.

Came on time, good prompt service. Good book. Vocal a bit lacking at times, assuming prior knowledge of some more difficult words, but I have an excellent dictionary, plus they're all in the back anyway. Could do with a few more translations and more work on English into Latin. But I wasn't expecting the Cambridge Latin Course to be very exacting and it isn't.

This course contains stories, information about Roman life and practise exercises in a very entertaining and humorous style which encourages you read on - a complete contrast to the very dull books we used when I first learned Latin 50 years ago!

Easy to follow but not to be recommended for studying without a tutor. The books are more enjoyable than those studied at school so many years ago. By all means give it a go in later life but it’s not for those with minimal aptitude for languages.

Sorry...it's a student text book that I will be working through over many months, so it's too soon to request an appraisal, but so far, I'm reasonably pleased with it
