Even though this book is written for 'surgical assistants', I have found it very useful as a qualified nurse, but ODPs, student nurses and doctors will all find it useful. It explains really clearly about basic prinicples in the operating theatres, suction, diathermy, 'prep' to the operation site, draping, goes through how to put on gowns and gloves, explains differnt instruments, and much more. It explains the obvious things you don't think to ask. Well worth the money.

It arrived in perfect time and the book is very good under every aspect. I highly reccomand it for all those who are interested in the subject

As I am in the process of doing my Surgical First Asistant's course this book has proved to be a very useful tool.

If the realm of the OR is completely foreign to you, this book is a good jumping-off point before you start your surgical rotation. It covers all of the basics and gives some info on assisting in different surgical specialties. The only drawback is that it's an "English" medicine text, not a "U.S." medicine text, so some of the terminology is not the same as is used in the U.S., e.g. "scout nurse" vs. "circulating nurse." It may seem a bit simplistic for those who have some OR experience, but if you don't this will acclimate you to a decent level of comfort before that first day.

The book is thorough on the topic, and helpful. However, I wish I had realized the authors were either English or Australian, discussing British style operating theatres before I purchased the book. Most of the topics can be applied to American OR's, however. I should have guessed that Cambridge Publishing would not be using American authors.

I thought it would give more advanced tricks and techniques. It was rather elementary. More for new techs and very green first assistants.
