Superman: The Definitive History

I was a bit on the fence about purchasing this, due to the hefty price of this hefty tome, and other Superman history books already in my library. After watching the interview with co-author Edward Gross on Comic Book Central, and an Amazon multi book discount, I decided to take the plunge and wasn't the least bit disappointed. Coverage of the Man of Steel's comic origins is plentiful and thorough, from characters and creators, to the many multimedia versions. Like Insight's Batman history book, facsimile items are even included throughout. "American Way", "Better Tomorrow"; this book even covers twists & turns that have gotten Superman fans talking, like a good history book would do. Like the saying goes, if you want one book on Superman, this is certainly it!

WOW! What a book! I thought I knew everything about Superman but this book proved me wrong. If you love Superman then this is the book for you. Tons of info on the history of the comic book origins, radio shows, TV shows, movies, video games, and more! Also, great display of photographs. A must read for Superman buffs.

What can be said about a book that, for a fan of Superman, is indescribable? This book, which weighs like 15-20 pounds, is less a coffee table book and more a coffee table. This thing is HUGE! To a Superman fan like me, it’s worth every penny. The packaging, from the cardboard shipper to the slipcase and book itself, is perfectly done and classy. The contents of the book itself are incredible. The reproducibles inside add a nice touch to a book that’s very well written in the first place. Getting lost for hours in this book is easily done! If you’re a fan of The Man of Steel, this book is one that you’ll spend hours upon blissful hours perusing and reading.

Good quality packing. Come in a perfect condition, though the book was shipped overseas, Love the book. Plenty of impressive pictures.

This is a great book. I love this book and it has a lot of Superman history in it. However... I don't know if this is Amazon's fault or my fault but when I ordered the book I thought it was just a regular sized book. But when the book came..... This book is f****** huge! I mean it's monstrous! Almost Longer than the width of a coffee table. Very heavy book. Besides that the book is great.

The second I saw this available for pre-order back in April I jumped. It finally arrived this week and was worth the weight. Literally at 15 or so pounds. Solid slipcase, beautiful cover, and great paper stock. I’m seeing photos I’ve never seen before, cool inserts, and the chapters are in a snappy, punchy prose style. If I have any complaint it’s the binding is a little tight. In the early sections I can’t really get it to lay flat. But considering it is the size of a small stereo system, that’s a minor concern. I do have to read it opened on a TV tray as it is. I recommend this for the Superman fan in your life. Whether they [think they] know everything about the Man of Steel or are a casual fan, this seems to have everything. It’s worth the price tag.

A huge heavy book that is very well packaged and thus arrives in perfect condition. Most of the book is about Superman post 1975 and thus older readers wanting more about Superman from the Golden, Silver and early Bronze Age will be disappointed, thus I deducted 1 star.

This is a wonderful compellation of what is most definitely the "definitive" history of Superman (discounting the current film which was released 6 mo. after the publishing date). I have only read the first 30 pages of this 400+ page tome, but scanning ahead, I have found many nice surprises including a line drawing (recreation) from the animated film ALL-STAR SUPERMAN (2012), and several others that I will not spoil in this review. I did not see a recount of the Broadway play - IT'S A BIRD, IT'S A PLANE, IT'S SUPERMAN, nor its subsequent television adaptation, but it's a big book. I might have missed it. The two drawback may be the price, and the weight of the book. It's heavy. You will need a sturdy shelf or coffee table, but I have not seen a better price, than here on Amazon. Overall; I'm very happy with this purchase, and I believe its one that Superman fans will love.
