It took 21+ years for our last Dog Mate door to break!
I installed this brand somewhere between 1999-2003. It was VERY durable. The older one broke because the dog came in & went back out with a tie down attached to his collar. He ended up putting unnecessary force on the door flap. Otherwise, the older one would still be in use. I specifically sought out this same brand as a replacement hoping that it would be just as durable. The design appears to be the same material and thickness. We have high hopes that this one will perform as well as the older model. This is a 2-person install to help hold the panels between the outside frame and the inside frame (what protects the inner parts of the door where you cut the hole). Otherwise, it's a simple concept to install.

Easy to install when replacing an existing doggie door.
Admittingly, our existing door was the same as the new door, but it lasted over 10 years. We've had no less than 3 dogs at a time. It has stood the test of time!

Not so easy to install, but ultimately a good pet door
NOT that easy to install, AND you need a jig saw AND a hack saw (or be prepared to buy screws that are the right size for your door). It took my brother 2-1/2 hours to install this for me (with a little help from me), and he's no hack at projects. Issues: 1) the screws come way too long just in case you have a very fat door. I don't have a hack saw, so that was a big time drain. 2) There are 4 plastic inserts that fit into the sides of the inside perimeter, and these also have to be cut to the right size (you will have to do a little math here). They are of plastic and not that easy to cut. 3) While we were struggling with getting the two sides installed on the door and the screws into the holes and through to the other side and into a nut that you can't hold, we forgot to watch that these interior plastic pieces were also aligned properly. They weren't, so we had to loosen everything and get them tucked back in. You can see in the pics that these side pieces aren't a perfect fit, even if they were "tucked in" better. I don't think that's a big problem, mostly cosmetic, but an added hassle. 4) No spare parts! We dropped a tiny little nut and had difficulty finding it! 5) As others have mentioned, NO TEMPLATE. Taping the pet door to your door to trace the opening and drill holes is doable, but it's stupid! Is one more piece of paper going to break the bank? (But I'll add that it's a very decent price for this door.)I have installed dog doors myself at least two previous times, and this one was harder. Hard to do by yourself IMHO. But, once it's in and aligned, it's a good door. I like that it has a hard plastic flap, so no warping or sticking to worry about. I like that it has a slide-on locking panel, which helps with weather issues AND my pets can see when it's not open for them.My dog is still intimidated by it. Even cookies aren't coaxing her. I'm confident she'll get it, though.Bottom line? Harder to install than it needs to be, but a good door at a good price.

2nd purchase
My first purchase of this door was in 2013. That door still works as well as the day it was installed. We have added an additional door in our house and we were happy to find that we can reorder the same doggy door.

great doors!
The doors are probably used much more in a kennel setting then they would be in a normal household. Last fall, I started to build a small kennel. It has 4 runs on each side of the building. I only finished one side (4 runs) and bought 4 of these inexpensive doors thinking they would get me by for now. Then in the spring when I finished the build and finished the other 4 runs I planned to purchase commercial grade dog doors. The original 4 have been on for over a year now and show no sign of wearing out. I have even seen pups half in and half out of the door, laying on their backs and chewing the flap. They held up so well that instead of buying the noisy expensive commercial dog doors I purchased 4 more for the other side. They are quiet and have worked well. I also love the extra light that they allow to come into the kennel. On extremely windy fall/winter days, the flaps will sometimes blow open, but when I put up a tarp on the perimeter fence ( I planned to anyway to protect the dogs from the cold winter wind) the problem was solved. They were easy to install, but to be fair, I do building projects all the time.UPDATE: 2 years later and still very happy with them!
