6 Blade Globe Impeller 815

The only way to go........
Bought this one as a spare to back up the Globe impeller currently in use (its third season!). I've run the pump dry numerous time trying to get it to prime after having it drained for the winter. There were no noticeable effects on the impeller, so I guess it does what it says it does.

DO NOT USE THIS PRODUCT!
DO NOT USE THIS PRODUCT!Globe impellers are sold under “Run-Dry®” marketing pitch, while no claims are being made about ability to prime or to pump.Think about it: why would you want to run your engine without cooling for 15 minutes???!!!These impellers have very poor self-priming ability and wear off much faster than OEM.Here is my story:I’ve purchased an impeller sold by Globe Marine Products on Amazon on August 21, 2017 and installed In March 2018.The engine was commissioned in May 2018 at the beginning of summer sailing season.During summer sailing season I’ve experienced numerous problems with engineRaw water pump self-priming after moving under sail with engine off. There was no water coming out of exhaust. My raw water pump is located bellow water line and no hoses, fittings or strainers areReaching above water line when the boat is leveled. In order to make raw water pump work, I had to loose pump cover plate to let air out,Sometimes it had to be done several times.I’ve never had this kind of problem while using OEM impeller: 15 years of ownership with extensive cruisingBetween NY and Miami, Bermuda, Bahamas and Caribbean. Finally, while sailing South in October 2018, I was not able to prime the pump at all.A couple of miles offshore, I replaced Globe Marine impeller with used OEM impeller and everything worked fine!Has been sailing in various conditions for six weeks since and had no problems at all.If you examine attached pictures, you’ll see how badly Globe Marine impeller tips are wornComparing to OEM impeller with over 3 times as much usage. Also, I observed that the engine was running hotter above 2100 RPM (Volvo Penta MD17D, Max RPM 3000)Not exactly overheating, but closer to red than before)I suspect that because Globe Marine impeller blades are softer, they don’t seal as well as OEM,Which can contribute to weaker raw water flow and, therefore, higher engine temperatures. Also, when you touch new Globe impeller it feels slippery.Don’t assume that it will remain slippery in service. When I removed mine, that slippery film was gone and it felt just like any common impeller. If you still want to try this product, watch exhaust water obsessively and monitor engine temperature.Make sure that you have time, sea room and ability to purge the pump or replace impeller when you start the engine.

Rerouted hoses so pump did not have to suck to pickup water
Installed one as a replacement on an Atomic 4 Sailboat engine. Initially it would not prime. Rerouted hoses so pump did not have to suck to pickup water. Started to work but water dribbled out the exhaust and then caught and water flowed. Ran the engine for 20 minutes at the dock and the engine water flow slowed the more I ran it. Checked engine temp and the exhaust manifold was over 200 degrees! Not good. Pulled the pump.Impeller was fine but apparently as it runs it cannot maintain sufficient pressure to get water through engine. I had a new impeller from Moyer Marine that was black rubber with a brass hub and I installed that in the same pump. Wow! The water flowed like crazy. High flow out the exhaust at both idle and running fast. I have no idea what is going on inside the pump, but my guess is that the vanes on this impeller flex too easily and thus the pump cannot create sufficient pressure head. I have two of these Globe impellers and now I have no idea what to do with them. I purchased them over a year ago from Amazon. As far as the run dry feature. I winterize my engine by running RV antifreeze through it once out of the water. I stick the pump intake hose right into the antifreeze container and pump about 3 gallons through the engine and exhaust after I drain the engine block. The antifreeze is slippery. In the spring I put Joy dishwashing detergent on the prop shaft strut to lube the cutlass bearing and start the engine up for a few seconds before the boat goes in the water. I have never had any issues with running the pump like that. The residual antifreeze lubes the pump for the few seconds of spring run time. All this said, these Globe impellers need to be redesigned if they are for the Atomic 4 engine. Its a great idea that doesn't work! :-(

Great product, works like it says
Purchased this to replace the OEM impeller on my Atomic 4 engine. I installed this in 2013 and it just now finally bit the dust after 5 years. We don’t run the engine a whole lot but I have forgotten to open the thru hull many times before starting the engine so it has run dry many times. I thought I had a spare but couldn’t find it so I’m back here to purchase another. Great product for the Atomic 4. This along with a thick cam shoe in the pump flow a lot of water.
