Tetragon, Joe Henderson's second Milestone recording, features the great tenor with two separate rhythm sections: Kenny Barron or Don Friedman on piano, bassist Ron Carter and either Louis Hayes or Jack DeJohnette on drums. Highlights of this LP include the title track, "I've Got You Under My Skin" and "Invitation." In Pursuit of Blackness, the other LP on this two-fer set, features the great tenor with two very different groups. "Invitation" and "Gazelle" are taken from the same live sessions that resulted in his previous album If You're Not Part of the Solution and showcase Henderson's quintet with trumpeter Woody Shaw, keyboardist George Cables, bassist Ron McClure and drummer Lenny White. The remaining three tracks are funkier and freer, adding bassist Stanley Clarke to a rhythm section of Cables and White and featuring the rather ad-libbed "Mind Over Matter." It's an interesting if slightly erratic set. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

Powerful and adventurous modern jazz from Joe Henderson's MILESTONE years.
This excellent CD combines most of two MILESTONE albums led by tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson(1937-2001) between 1967 & 1971.Tracks 1-3 & 5('Tetragon') were recorded in New York City on May 16, 1968 with Henderson(tenor sax); Don Friedman(piano); Ron Carter(bass) & Jack DeJohnette(drums).Tracks 4, 6 & 7('Tetragon') were recorded in New York City on September 27, 1967 with the above personnel but Kenny Barron(piano) & Louis Hayes(drums) replacing Friedman & DeJohnette.Tracks 8, 9 & 11('In Pursuit Of Blackness') were recorded in New York City on May 12, 1971 with Henderson(tenor sax); Pete Yellen(alto sax, flute, bass clarinet); Curtis Fuller(trombone); George Cables(electric piano); Stanley Clarke(bass) & Lenny White(drums).Track 10('In Pursuit Of Blackness') was recorded at Lighthouse Café, Hermosa Beach on September 25/26, 1970 with Henderson(tenor sax); Woody Shaw(trumpet); George Cables(electric piano); Ron McLure(bass); Lenny White(drums) & Tony Waters(congas). One track, 'Invitation', from this live session has been omitted due to time limitations. All in all, the 77 minutes of powerful and adventurous modern jazz are a good representation of Joe Henderson's MILESTONE years and well worth hearing. The eyes of a hawk or a powerful magnifying glass are required to read the tiny, faint print of the CD liner notes.
