I was looking for a game to play with my family that wouldn't end in screaming, tears, or a three-hour explanation of the rules. The WE Games Wooden Shut The Box is IT.The "Easy to Play" Factor:My 7-year-old figured this out in 30 seconds. Roll dice, flip numbers. That’s it. It’s basically gambling for kids without the risk of losing their college fund (unless you are playing for high stakes, which I don't recommend with a 7-year-old). It makes addition fun, which is weird, but I'll take it.The "Play for Hours" Factor:We bought this for a "quick game" and ended up sitting at the table for three hours, yelling "SHUT THE BOX!" every time someone flipped all the tiles. It’s addictive. It’s simple. It’s noisy (in a fun way). The wood feels nice, and the felt lining makes the dice rolls feel very fancy, like we are Victorian-era fishermen—minus the smell of fish.Pros:Looks great on the coffee table.Felt-lined, so you can roll aggressively without breaking your table.Perfect for when you want to feel smart doing basic math.Cons:You will develop a competitive vendetta against your spouse over the number '9'.If you need a simple, high-quality, and frustratingly fun game, buy this. It is a fantastic way to spend a rainy afternoon.

Shut the Box is what games should be; quick to learn and easy to play. The game consists of a box with 12 bars numbered 1-12 that can be in an up or down position. The game starts with all bars up. Players roll dice and press down the corresponding number or combination of numbers that add up to the roll of the dice. For example, if a 10 is rolled, the player can put the 10 down or a 6 and 4, 7 and 3, 2 and 8, or 9 and 1. Once a numbered bar is down, it is out of play. The object is to roll until you can't make the number. So if you roll a 9, but all you have left is a 4 and a 1, your turn is over. The object is to shut the box or get the lowest score possible.Once the students get familiar with their number facts, games go very quickly. When my students know their addition facts well, I have them use subtraction combinations also, making it easier to shut the box. This version goes up to 12; some versions I've seen only go up to 9. I like the bigger version, but it is a relatively large box, so you need to have the room to store it.This game is great for home and school. You'll be amazed at how fast students learn their addition facts and how eager they are to play the game, usually over and over, hoping to be the first to actually shut the box.

Box, levers, numbering are all very well made and durable. Family from grandparents to 5 yr. old children love playing this game. It is now one of the family favorites. We really like that the numbers go from 1-12. A nice feature is that the two dice fit nicely under the closed levers so they don't get lost. Even the heavy-duty cardboard packaging that the game came in is especially well made and is holding up great, still protecting the contents. I paid more for this particular game than some other Shut the Box games cost but this one is top quality all the way; even with all the use it is getting I still expect it to last for years because of the quality of materials used and the excellent construction. Another plus is that the children are markedly improving their math abilities in school! One minor downside...The explanation of the rules for the game that came with this were not too clear so I went on to Wikipedia and got better rules explanation and also lots of variations for the game.

My late friend Roger introduced me to this game because he was tired of losing every chess game he played against me for three years. I had to buy one to while away the long winter nights with my wife when the snow was too deep to go anywhere. I have since introduced it to my children and granddaughters who love it.

I bought this game to play with my grand kids. It’s fast, simple, high quality design and functionality; it encourages use of math while having fun. The only negative is, I’m sure the dice will get misplaced because there is no I storage case or compartment to hold the dice, when not in use.

I decided to purchase this for two reasons. I remember playing this as a kid and having so much fun with it. I also bought it as one of the family games to take to a relative's house over the holidays. It was an instant hit! Those that remembered playing it before were excited to play again and those that had never played were instantly addicted. It's perfect for solo play when you just have a few minutes, or to pass around the table at large gatherings. The box on this model is very sturdy, yet it's still small enough to easily take along in the car. I much prefer the 1 through 12 model to the ones with only 9 or 10 numbers. Great price, durable, easy to learn. I'm very satisfied with this purchase.

Purchased this as a gift for a wee relative. I liked this version has it had 12 numbers. Many of the other similar games only had 9 numbers which I didn’t understand as maximum on 2 dice comes to 12 - I suppose the 9 digit version perhaps makes the game more difficult - I don’t know, I just prefer the 12 digit version.

Amazing game - would 100% recommend it as there are many variations to this game. The reason I gave this specific brand 4 stars is because it is a bit small and does not come into actually close in box but it is also a strength because it is simple and easy to store away and set up! I personally like the box set up but the price point on this was more favourable.It got here really quick and is just as advertised. Would recommend to anyone at this price point. Not paid for this review nor was I given this for free. I keep it 100%
