The stories are in both Japanese and English. There are cute illustrations throughout the book. I would recommend this for beginners once they have learned hiragana and katakana, there is some kanji with furigana above so it is still legible without any prior kanji knowledge. Review: Entertaining short stories with many aids to learning - I enjoyed these little stories. Each is presented first with just the Japanese text (including furigana) and illustrations, then some notes on vocabulary and a Q&A (also only Japanese), then the story again with English translation. The presentation if the material is atteactive and clear. The level might be a bit of a stretch for me still, but I think that is probably about what I need. On first pass, I would understand parts but still be flipping to the translation pages to check or remind myself of particular words - though the illustrations also provide hints. I've already read the previous Level 1 volume 1 which is also good, and also one at Level 2 which is a good challenge though I'm a little way from being able to just read it!
