American Mary

This is not a movie you would want to show anyone under 16yrs old but; the movie was just insane. Katherine Isabelle played a crazy Mary role and she knocked it out of the park. I loved John Emmet Tracy as Detective Dolor because; he portrayed such realism to what a detective would have said to a victim. Great Job!

I really didn't expect it to be as great as I thought it was going to be. I honestly would consider it to be a feminist horror film, as far as horror films go, and it is incredible with how it portrays body modification in terms of how it can horrify and entice the audience. There are a few moments where it feels very strange, in the scenes with the surgeons, but they're supposed to be off-putting and you're supposed to know that something is wrong with them. If you want a rape revenge film that does not sexualize violence against women while focusing entirely on how the woman responds to the rape. It does have very disturbing imagery, so if you are unable to take rape scenes at all or take images of mutilated bodies, then this probably isn't for you. If you can stomach it, it won't disappoint.

One of my favorite horror films in the last ten years. I have to say that I'm a little biased when it comes to Kathrine Isabelle (I love that actress since I first saw her in "Ginger Snaps") and the Soska Sisters. Mrs. Isabelle gives a touching performance as a struggling med student and the Soska Sisters show a great deal of talent for the the mix of viscerality and dark humor. A must-have for fans of horror films with a great female character in the lead role. The only let down for me was the ending. I'm not going to spoil it here for you, but look for yourself.

Bought this for a gift 4 a friend who hasn't seen it, he's an older gentleman who still uses a home phone and prepaid flip cell phone and does dvds so I was glad to have found this title for him it's one of my all time faves! A must see. Great price too

I have bought a lot of horror films that have been reviewed as disturbing and intelligent little masterpieces. Nonetheless, I've been disappointed most of the times. I didn't find Henry, May or Making Off particularly good, disturbing, or well written. Indeed, I found Making Off really bad and Henry mediocre at best. But since I love a horror film when it's intelligent, disturbing, and original, I keep trying flicks that I found highly rated in Amazon, so I bought American Mary. First of all, American Mary's got a hell of a disturbing story and a great performance by Katherine Isabelle. I don't like spoilers, so I just want to say that it is one of the most disturbing and original horror films that I've come across maybe since Hostel. And trust me, I see a lot of horror movies. I truely recommend it to horror fans that are looking for a disturbing flick with a story and a great performance. Second, the film's got a lot of stories going on, specially the one about the body modification scene. This makes American Mary more interesting than most horror films that simply cannot not appeal a serious movie fan. Last, having a female killer is a really nice twist.

I've watched it many times and love it! The dvd and the dvd case are in great condition and plays perfectly.

A strange subgenre that always gets lumped in with 'horror'. If a bloody revenge movie involves the mafia, it's a 'drama'. But if it's a personal story of revenge, it's always 'horror', even when the most horrific thing in the movie is the act that justifies said revenge. But I digress. The casting, acting, effects, cinematography, and directing are all fantastic. But the way the script was written leads to bad pacing. It's a bit of a slow burn, followed by ups and downs where the ups don't feel elevated to the point of climax and the downs feel subdued. Then there's an ending that feels forced, as if the writers didn't know how to finish the story in an interesting way and came up with an ending that feels tacked on yet wraps things up. All in all, American Mary is a pretty good movie that's nowhere near the best revenge film and barely qualifies as horror.

One of my favorites to watch!

丁寧，丹念に作り込まれてます。 カメラ、衣装、その他のスタッフ達の見事な仕事ぶりがわかります。 なんでもなさそうなシーンも、室内や屋外の変化、構図のうまさで 退屈しないで見れました。 主役の演技も、目の表情だけで、感情がわかります。 衣装もボンテージ風、その他もはまってます。 脇の役者たちも、それぞれ存在感があり、 写ること、登場する事自体が伏線になってたりします。 全体に、淡々と、画面は進行しますが、飽きませんね。 見終わった後に、ちょっと切ない気持ちが残りました。 英語は聞き取れませんが充分に楽しめました。 ２は、出来ないのかと期待してます。（笑）

Excelente película.

This movie isn't typical which is what I enjoy about it. Katharine Isabelle is a unique beauty and a good actress, she really holds this film together. It keeps you interested the whole way through and has a creative approach to the horror genre. Just enough suspense and gore without over doing either. This movie is not by any means oscar worthy but if you are looking for something different, enjoy independent type films, are a fan of horror, body modification and Katharine Isabelle this is a good choice.
