Is there a grease to apply to the threads of the cartridge before installing the cap? My old cartridge has some type of thick film residue.

It may have had a silicon grease, designed for potable water systems, applied to it during installation. That the only “grease” that may have been there. It would help in not allowing the seal to get pinched or it may have been to keep the seal in place.
