Meter Box Latch Kit (IS0020-Z)

Great price and served its purpose well - replaced latch which had gone brittle and crumbled to bits. Time will tell how long this one lasts, but arrived quickly and was easy to fit (see this YouTube video: (...)). Basically: remove the old latch and washer, you insert the metal wavy washer into the hole on the OUTSIDE of the meter door; push the spindle through from the outside with the split end first (leaving the triangular bit facing out); push the square hole in the latch part over the split end of the spindle (the flat side of the latch faces against the door); I found it helped to put the Gas Meter key over the triangular spindle and used that to push the spindle and latch together tight. Took less than 5 minutes from opening packet ! Cheap, easy fix - just the ticket !

Does what it says

The spindle on this item just wasn't long enough to pass through the base plate and 'lock' into position? I could have returned it for an exchange/refund, but i'm quite capable at DIY, so I cut/trimmed the shoulder back slightly, which fixed the issue. However, once in place, I still managed to clumsily knock the latch and it broke! From all the parts available (old/new) I've managed to fix the issue (for now?)

Does the job

It was very easy to fit the latch. Even though no instructions were supplied, it was fairly intuitive. My only slight criticism is that the triangular head of the latch is very slightly larger than the one that I was replacing. A standard-size meter-cupboard key is a tight fit: the first time I used it, the key got jammed on the post and ripped the washer off as I tried to remove it. Now I know just to put the tip of the key onto the post: just enough to be able to turn the latch. Maybe the mould for the triangular head needs to be 0.5 to 1 mm smaller, so a key will fit easily without jamming on.
