It works well on a plastic table. I use a cheap plastic table from Walmart when I’m at college. No burning.

what kind of inner pads or layers does it have and does it have a layer that will keep it kinda stiff?

This has a thin padded layer but I use it on my kitchen counters with no problem at all. I wouldn’t say it is stiff as it does fold up when I am not using it but it does lay flat when used. I bought mostly to use with my cricut for when I quickly want to make a shirt with my iron and it works great for that!
