This is a very clever measuring tape quite unlike any other! Usually the steel tape is enclosed along with the mechanism required to rewind it when you press a button. The boffins at BMI have done away with both the case and the mechanism. Through a clever application of mechanical forces, the tension of the wound tape itself is harnessed to create a measure that unwinds itself at the press of a button - the reverse of what happens usually!Some reviewers have down-rated this product because it does not have a lip on the leading edge, but that's missing the point. It's specifically NOT designed to be hooked and pulled out - every other tape on the planet does that. This one works best for users working on horizontal surfaces, and who need to measure up to a corner. With a press of the button (which acts as a clutch) the tension in the tape is released and it magically emerges, extending itself right across your work bench! One handed operation becomes simple. This is a measure for specific application, and in that role it excels. It also amazes everyone I show!The German build quality of this tool is outstanding, and there really is nothing to go wrong here. The fact that the metric gradations cover the entire width of the tape (no pointless imperial scale to get in the way) is a real boon. This tape is very small, very light and sits incredibly well in the hand. BMI have even give you a super-simple belt clip for your convenience, but I usually just keep mine in my pocket. I'm very pleased with my purchase and can recommend it wholeheartedly. I suggest pairing it with a BMI Pocket Measuring Tape with Sight Window/Compass Function if you need a tape that works conventionally too.

if like me you are a self confessed tool gadget guy, you are going to love this handy little saucy number. always love taking into work something different that nobody yet has. gets all the tongues waking. on a practical level, its not the longest tape measure in the world, but is perfect for small jobs and a joy to handle. well made and great quality. the stuff that tool gadget dreams are made of.

On the expensive side however worth the cost. Well made and easy to use. The flat tape so much better than 'normal' tape measures.

One of the best small measuring tape out there for the construction industry. Not really fan of the clip for attaching it to clothes or work belts as it keeps falling off. A bit overpriced for 2m of tape but it’s reallly good quality.

I have many tape measures, rulers and the like. This has the best of both worlds, it rolls up for convenience but lays flat during use, like a ruler. The markings are clearly legible & it does not have the inaccurate hook of all tape measures. I have one of these already (love it) but bought this for a friend’s Xmas present

Nice little tape measure just let down by the finish of the actual tape. Odd paint bubbles on rear and slightly soft markings on front. Will function fine and I'm sure I'll get plenty of use out of it.

This tape was recommended by a very good joiner/cabinet maker. It is excellent for accuracy and ease of use. It’s different to a ‘normal’ tape measure, with no hook on the end but there are major advantages as far as measuring is concerned. Highly recommend.
