Q: Has anyone used this in sand? I'm curious about how effective the sand anchor is that is included.

Screw tip is good for sand but not great; it’s small and there are no handles for leverage. I had to mound sand at the base to compensate. Would recommend using a robust sand anchor in conjunction with this umbrella

Q: whats the pole diameter?

I really don’t know but it is good diameter I use in the beach and my back yard too .
