Are these dishwasher safe?

I'm not sure, I don't put them in to be safe, but they are an excellent set!

These arrived with no manual or instructions. Is there something special I need to do before using them the first time?

I always clean things before using. But no. It’s true this cookware is wonderful. I don’t cook anything on high. When you experience this you will love love them. Enjoy.

Why did the handle on one of the frying pans break off? Is it replaceable or do you sell just lids?

Could you elaborate break off? Majority of the time when the handle breaks off it’s mainly the screw going loose and you can screw it back on. As far as lids go, they don’t sell lids

What is the base material? Is it steel?

No. It appears to be a ceramic or ceramic-like surface. I love it. No sticking. Cooks beautifully and easy to wash.
