is this a staight substitute for the vanilla extract you get in the tiny 35ml bottles from the supermarket? eg, is 1tsp enough for a vanilla sponge

No..it is not as strong the extract from the tiny 35ml bottles. I have found you need to double up the quantity of 1tsp to 2tsp.

What % vanillia is it?

It does not say the percentage of vanilla on the bottle. I have used it for years and it is very good if you don't want to use alcohol based essence. I just use 2 tablespoons for a 10-12" cake batter and it has worked for me

Does this essence contain oil ?

No, it is not oil based essences
