A game changer for smartphone addicts
Besyoyo TWS-E7 True Wireless Earbuds are among the first low-priced stereo earbud sets that incorporate technology first seen in Apple’s AirPods and other premium brands. In a nutshell, the E7s transform the smartphone user experience. Being in-ear and wirefree (my term for “truly wireless”), the E7s are nearly invisible. Because they don’t block out local sound, the user can interact with colleagues while wearing them. At the same time, when a call comes into the user’s smartphone, they can click to take the call and engage in a clear cell phone conversation. To my mind, the biggest sales feature of the E7s is that I can be online with my smartphone at all times while almost never having to take it out of my pocket. My co-workers and lunch companions will not have to fear I am “two-timing” them by constantly checking my phone. Instead I can fully engage with the people around me. If they didn’t do anything else, the E7s will be a giant step forward in smartphone etiquette. But they do so much more, and so well.Loaded with the latest technology, like Qualcomm’s cVc noise cancellation and Bluetooth 4.1, the E7s will play back your Kenny Rogers hits at surprisingly high fidelity. I bought the E7s as a backup for my $80 MEES Fit 1s, a current leader in earbud music playback quality, and was delighted to find the E7s comparable, with the Fit 1s giving maybe a little more in the bass and volume departments – perhaps a little too much bass.If you don’t intend to play back music, you can leave one of the E7s in its storage box and use the other for phone calls, podcast playback, and the like. There’s a slew of single earbuds in the $20 range that do the same thing – I own two. But I find myself choosing the E7s over them most days because should the mood strike, I’ll have the option to listen to some soothing music. For me that’s well worth the extra $20.LIVING DAY TO DAY WITH THE E7sI’ve been using the E7s pretty intensively since late November and find them easy to live with. But because they’re so small, I’ve found out you’ll have to take a few precautions.USING THE CASE FOR CHARGING AND STORAGE. The E7s’ case contains its own battery, which is pre-charged at the factory. Nevertheless I used the included micro-UBS cable to top it up before pairing the earbuds. The case’s battery in turn charges the earbuds. When charging, the earbuds emit a ghostly red glow through the case’s semi-transparent plastic top.The case is where your earbuds should live when they’re not in your ears. That way they’ll always be charged and the odds of misplacing one or both earbuds go way down. The case is small enough to fit in anybody’s pocket. When returning the earbuds to the case be careful not to switch them. Each earbud has a tiny faint L or R label indicating which ear it’s for. When putting them away, the R earbud goes into the case’s left pocket, and vice-versa. (Go figure.) If you put them in backwards they won’t charge. You’ll know you’ve put them away properly when you see the red charging glow after you close the case. There’s a little sliver button inside the case you’re supposed to press to get charging started. I always forget but the earbuds charge anyway. (As with most technology products today the E7’s included documentation is nearly useless. I ended up printing out the product description screenshots on the Amazon page to learn more about using the product.)The earbuds take a couple of hours to charge and though the manufacturer claims they give two hours of playback before recharge, I get closer to three. The battery box will charge the earbuds three times before it needs to be replenished via its micro-USB cable.TURNING ON AND PAIRING Make sure your smartphone (Apple or Android) Bluetooth is turned off. Remove the earbuds from the case and hold them in each hand so your thumb can access the tiny eyebrow-shaped buttons in each. (See accompanying photos.) Press both buttons simultaneously and hold them down. After a few seconds both earbuds will flash their red lights. Keep the buttons pressed and a few seconds later the red and blue lights in both earbuds will start flashing madly. That means they’re paired with each other.Next, insert the buds into your ears (see below for suggestions) and activate your smartphone’s Bluetooth. You should hear connection-confirmed voice messages through both earbuds. The Earteana brand name shows up on your Bluetooth list of connected devices. (It may show up twice – but will revert to one after a few seconds provided the earbuds have paired with each other.) Overall the process works, but once in while I lose the Bluetooth connection. When that happens I start over – removing the Bluetooth list and restarting the two-step connection process. It’s actually easier than it sounds and takes 30 seconds at most to restore the connection. Not an issue. The right earbud is used for cell phone functionality. When a call comes in, press its button to take the call. Press again to hang up. To save battery life remove both earbuds and as before press and hold their buttons. Release after they flash red and their power will be off. Having said that, my preference is not to bother turning off the earbuds but instead to replace them in their battery box. There they’ll return to full charge automatically and I’m less likely to lose or damage the earbuds.FITTING TO YOUR EARS AND WEARING The E7s come with three sizes of eartips. The eartips are round and rubbery. It’s important to use eartips that fit snugly into your ear canals. The earbuds themselves are smooth, hard, shiny plastic and do not “grip” your ears. With the wrong-sized eartips the earbuds could fall out of your ears. Chances are you’ll find the right fit with the supplied eartips, but if none of the eartips that come with the product are the right fit for you, eartips in additional sizes can be purchased from various vendors on Amazon. I like foam rubber eartips from Comply. For me they are the most comfortable and secure, but also they are expensive and wear out after a few weeks and need to be replaced. Give the eartips provided with the E7 a good chance before looking at aftermarket eartips. When inserting the E7s, twist them so that their bulbous shape snugs itself into the hollow space just outside your ear canal. You can feel the earbuds locking into this space when you get it right. The earbuds just nestle themselves into that little pocket and, with the right eartips, are very resistant to falling out. Ergonomic design at its finest. But still . . . the earbuds can be knocked out accidentally with only the swipe of a finger, so be careful. I had an E7 go bouncing across my hardwood floor and found it three days later, hiding behind a table leg.NOISE CANCELLATION Unless you retrofit them with foam eartips, the E7s provide very little “passive” noise cancellation where the device’s presence in your ear canal blocks out sound – similar to putting your hands over your ears. Actually this is a good thing because while wearing both E7s I can still converse normally with people around me. While riding my bike I can listen to podcasts and still hear the traffic. The E7s are fitted with Qualcomm’s leading-edge cVc noise canceling. The name stands for “Clear Voice Capture,” a technology that actively suppresses background noise while leaving the volume level of human voices unchanged. Its greatest benefit is clear telephone conversations despite cellular’s poor transmission quality. In my experience with the E7s, cellphone conversations are clearer for both parties than when using my iPhone 6S’s built-in microphone and speaker. Considering the small size of these earbuds and their position, that’s some pretty impressive engineering.THE FUTURE OF WIREFREE EARBUDS IS BRIGHTI expect my E7s will give me a couple of years of good service. In a few months I’ll know whether their batteries are degrading prematurely. (Battery degradation is the Achilles heel of mobile technology.) I’ll check back into this review with an update about how the batteries are holding up.The E7s come with Bluetooth 4.1, the current standard. Expect models introduced in 2018 to be equipped with Bluetooth 5.0. (The newest smartphones from Apple and Samsung already have it.) With my E7s I can leave my phone on my office desk and take calls in the next room. Bluetooth 5 should enable me to take calls from anywhere in the building. We’ll see.THIS SECTION IS FOR BABY BOOMERS ONLY For my baby boomer generation, the Next Big Thing in earbud technology will be hearing enhancement. Last year I had my hearing tested by an audiologist because I was having trouble making out people’s voices in crowded or echo-y rooms. And sure enough, the test confirmed I’m gradually losing the ability to hear sounds in the upper register. After being shamed by younger friends for asking them to repeat themselves, I purchased on Amazon a $400 set of “personal sound amplifiers” by Etymotic Research. Now I no longer need to have closed captioning turned on when I watch movies on TV.Legislation is in the works that will take hearing aids, which cost multiple thousands of dollars, out of the monopoly of the audiologists and permit open competition in the retail sector, including Amazon.Within the next couple of years I expect to own a set of wirefree earbuds that possess not only all the virtues of my Besyoyo TWS-E7 True Wireless Earbuds, but at the same time, perhaps with the help of a fine-tuning app on my smartphone, those same earbuds will provide me with sound enhancement close to or equal to that of dedicated hearing aids. I’ve worked in the tech sector for more than 30s years and have yet to be disappointed in the rate of progress. And now, even for around $40, we have wirefree earbuds that are the equal of the sophisticated smartphones they were designed for.For the foreseeable future, which it the tech sector is a year or two, I intend to rely on the E7s to give me the sound quality and functionality I seek. That they’re Bluetooth Wireless Earbuds, Besyoyo Mini Wireless Headphones Stereo Bluetooth V4.1 Headset with Charging Box,Sweatproof Noise-Canceling Wireless Earbuds Build-In Mic for iPhone and Android Phones bargain priced is icing on the cake. A year ago a set of wirefree earbuds with this feature set would have cost me $300.Beyond being top quality earbuds, the E7s enable me to have my cake and eat it too. I can monitor my smartphone for cellular calls and answer them when appropriate, while simultaneously interacting with the people around me: conversing with co-workers and being aware of the requests of the checkout clerk at my local grocery store. And none of them will even suspect I’ve got Kenny Rogers singing softly in the background.
